Recommended gear

With what you can get before this boss, in your first cycle.

Editor's pick No status: everything hinges on knocking him down, which the Wandering Wight's attack and your charged heavy attacks do. The Golden Mask of Fury grants a lot of Focus after a spirit attack lands, and with the Golden Embroidered Shirt your Attack rises right after; each piece needs 2 Fine Gold Thread, otherwise keep See No Evil and your Loongscale Battlerobe. The Chitin Staff heals with each charged heavy attack that lands; without 4 Refined Iron Sand, keep the Kang-Jin Staff.

The fight

2 separate fights. First, at the hut: wide rake swings, often slow to start, and streams of mud from a distance; big hits easily make him stumble, and he flees once his health bar is empty. Second, in the pit, with a fresh health bar: the mud heavily slows your dodge rolls, not your sprint. He keeps his moves, more aggressive, and sometimes turns into a rolling mud fish. Below half health, a cutscene, then he becomes a giant boar: charges, geysers, then a long series of mud beasts, a giant fish and 3 rhinos, before he collapses, exhausted. Once beaten, he is freed from the needle thanks to the mirror found on Bodhisattva's Right Hand.

One set: no status to counter in either fight, and nothing new is earned in between. Still rest at the shrine before the pit to recharge your mana.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • No status effect reported in either fight: rake swings, streams of mud, charges and mud beasts.

Attacks to watch

  • Glowing red rake: explosive charged swings that split the ground and send out shockwaves; deflecting them knocks you back. His 5-swing series, 2 slow then 3 fast, ends with a charge and a slow overhead slam: dodge sideways while he's airborne, then strike.
  • A leap with a pause, a slam, then he slides past you and pivots to strike again: be ready to dodge a second time.
  • A low spin that turns into a tornado and pulls you in. At the hut, once you've avoided it, he ends up dizzy: hit his flank, since from the front he can vomit on you. In the pit, sprint away instead of dodging: he no longer gets dizzy.
  • Boar: he stomps, raises mud geysers, then chains charges; sprint out of his path or dodge at the last moment. He also dives at you, then mule-kicks with his hind legs: dodge as he lands, then the kick.
  • Mud beasts, which Immobilize can't stop: the giant fish leaps, then lands with a shockwave, get into Pillar Stance just before impact or jump over it; it then swims under the mud, watch for ripples. Then 3 rhinos charge 3 times: back off to read their paths; the 2 copies go straight, he adjusts his.

What works

  • At the hut and in the first half of the second fight: A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, a quick combo, the Wandering Wight's attack, which staggers him, then Cloud Step and your transformation. In the pit, dodge his first 3 attacks first. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step
  • Charged heavy attacks at 3 Focus Points and spirit attacks: he goes down easily, which opens long windows.
  • Boar collapsed: that's the time to unload everything, stored Focus, spirit attack, transformation. Immobilize significantly extends his fall. Immobilize
  • Rock Solid, in place of Cloud Step: deflecting a boar charge knocks you back, but often makes him fall. Against the rhinos, it only pushes you back in front of him. Rock Solid

Strategy

  • In the pit, don't mash dodge: your rolls are slow. Sprint when you can and, in a pinch, switch to your transformation: it can evade better than you in the mud, but don't waste your Might.
  • Keep 1 Focus Point for a Thrust Stance varied combo: it takes you out of his rake's reach.
  • His mud beast phase is long: defend first, only strike once the boar is down, and heal as soon as a hit lands.

Access

Webbed Hollow, Hut of Immortality shrine, at the end of the long dark tunnel past the Lower Hollow shrine. First fight: from the shrine, go to where the wedding feast is held; a cutscene starts the fight. Second fight: once beaten, he flees and the hut's doors are sealed; go back to the shrine, where he has opened a path on the left, and squeeze through the narrow gap to the mud pit. Mandatory: the way to the Violet Spider goes through both fights.

What it gives

Will: 2,603

Unlocks

First fight: Will only, about 2,600, the same as the second. Second fight: 2 Fine Gold Thread, the Blood Stained Needle and the Jade Moon Rabbit, a damage reduction curio, stronger if you also wear the Gold Sun Crow; crafting for the Non-Pure set unlocks.

The Blood Stained Needle is used automatically after the fight against The Duskveil: it becomes the Weaver's Needle, a vessel.

Updates

Update 1.0.13: fixed an issue where Zhu Bajie could not be defeated during a certain phase. Update 1.0.21: fixed a crash when using the Non-White spirit at the Hut of Immortality.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
