What the demo shows
- The playable hero is a swordsman; nothing says yet whether he is Zhong Kui himself. PC Gamer, August 20, 2026
- Combat relies on tight dodges and parries, with sweeping, committed attacks. PC Gamer, August 20, 2026
- The blade takes on elements: the hero sets a group of enemies ablaze, draws that fire into his sword and unleashes it in the next fight; elsewhere, it is charged with lightning. God is a Geek, August 20, 2026
- He summons an allied warrior who fights on his own and draws enemy attacks. Against the final boss, a winged creature that tears off its wings for its second phase, the hero briefly fuses with this warrior and takes control of it. God is a Geek, August 20, 2026
- The demo opens on a tidal wave that wrecks rafts and washes the hero up on a beach. Enemies seen: creatures from an oily swamp, glowing mushroom men, a half-man, half-oyster boss. PC Gamer, August 20, 2026
- The combat interface follows Wukong's layout: hero gauges at the bottom left, boss health bar in the center, techniques at the bottom right. Official video, Black Myth YouTube channel

What we know about the game
The game, according to the studio
Like Wukong, a single-player action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and folklore, with the same business model. The studio wants to keep what players loved about Wukong while exploring gameplay built around the new hero, cutting-edge technology and a different way of telling the story. It says nothing more about the story or the gameplay, and warns that the videos, shown very early, include ideas that are still experimental.
Who is Zhong Kui?
A legendary figure that no historical record attests. A top scholar of the Tang imperial examinations, he is driven out of the palace by the emperor, frightened by his face, and kills himself against a pillar. When demons later haunt the emperor's dreams, he is the one who drives them away: the emperor names him a judge tasked with warding off evil, and the King of Hell gives him a bronze sword to hunt demons. Paintings, tales and operas made him the demon hunter of Chinese folklore.
Why Zhong Kui before a Wukong sequel?
After Wukong, the team had started work on additional content, then chose to launch a new game instead: new heroes, new gameplay, new technology, a new story. The studio promises that Wukong's story will return later, in a more complete form.
