Recommended gear
Coming back later: everything you can get in Chapter 6 without beating it.
Editor's pick Later in the chapter, the Jingubang, by far the strongest weapon in the game, and the 4 Monkey King pieces, among the most powerful in the game, outclass your gear: worn together, they raise your Critical Hit Chance right after a spell and shorten your spell cooldowns on each critical hit, handy for recasting Immobilize before it dives. Red Tides remains the recommended transformation.

The 4 Monkey King pieces drop from the Gold Armored Rhino, the Cloudtreading Deer, the Feng-Tail General and the Emerald-Armed Mantis; you then get the Jingubang in the Water Curtain Cave, once you hold the 4 pieces: wear them to be sure to trigger the cutscene.
The fight
A fight with no shrine or break against a big, slow, hippo-like beast, easy to hit out of the water: bites, stomps, a cry and kicks. When its health gets low, it dives and tries to catch you by surprise from under the water, like the Jiao-Loong of Waves.
One set: no shrine or break, and no change of element.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- No status named: the descriptions of its attacks, bites, stomp, cry, kicks and underwater ambushes, mention none.
Attacks to watch
- Bite: from the front, it lunges to bite you; stay behind it, but then watch out for its backward kicks.
- Stomp: it rears up, then slams its front legs down; dodge as soon as it rises.
- Cry: it lowers its head, then lets out a cry whose shockwave pushes you back; back away at once.
- Ambushes, when its health is low: it peeks out, disappears, then the ground rumbles; the ripples and bubbles show its exact path to you, so dodge when it bursts out to bite.
What works
- Immobilize: cast it before it dives, then chain your spells while it is frozen; it moves around a lot, so make the most of every immobilization. Immobilize
- Red Tides: made of wood, it catches fire easily. Build up Focus, then a heavy attack while transformed knocks it over and sets it ablaze; return to your form and strike while it burns, until the water puts it out. The heavy attack's dash also helps you catch up with it. Red Tides
- Opening sequence: A Pluck of Many, the Weaver's Needle, Immobilize, then a string of quick attacks, the Wandering Wight's attack, Cloud Step and your transformation take off a good part of its health, or even finish it. A Pluck of Many, Weaver's Needle, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step
Strategy
- A big, slow target: hit hard while it is out of the water, before it dives.
- Only the biggest beast in the lake, the one that shows a health bar, is the boss; killing a regular one still records the journal entry. Water-Wood Beast
Access
Foothills, in the left corner of the large lower lake closest to the cliff you start from, not at the far end of the lake, where the river widens into a circle: from the cliff edge where the Supreme Celestial Inspector leaves you, head left on the Somersault Cloud to the very end, or fly over the swamp from the Mantis-Catching Swamp shrine. Bubbles rise in the middle of the water: get close and the Beast bursts out. Optional and hidden, it requires the Somersault Cloud. The lake holds other similar beasts, smaller and without a health bar: only the biggest one is the boss.
