Editor's pick The Plantain Fan is the best answer to its stone form. The Yaksha Armor Set greatly raises the damage you deal, and the damage you take; the Red-Haired Yaksha strengthens your heavy attacks, which break that form, and the Amber Prayer Beads speed up your Focus to charge them. The Iron Pellet keeps you from being interrupted while drinking under its rocks.

Base values, before upgrades, from the registry.

Yaksha Armor Set: 12 Cold Iron Leaves, 6 Fine Gold Thread and 29,100 Will for the 4 pieces. In Chapter 6, the Supreme Celestial Inspector gives 2 Fine Gold Thread, the shrines sell 2, and several other optional bosses drop 1 each: the Jiao-Loong of Waves, each of the 4 Poison Chiefs and the Son of Stones; Lang-Baw-Baw will give you 1 more. If you're short, keep the Bronze set: with its 4 pieces, crashing an immobilization deals extra damage and greatly shortens Immobilize's cooldown.

For the weapon, the Bishui Beast Staff or the Staff of Blazing Karma if you have their materials: 4 Gold Tree Cores each; the Supreme Celestial Inspector gave you 2 and the shrines sell 1. Otherwise, keep the Chitin Staff.

The fight

A single fight, a single health bar, but it changes state. Red, it is vulnerable and fights like the other frogs: tongue, leaps, kicks. During the fight, its skin turns to stone: once brown, it makes your blows bounce off, dealing almost nothing, and switches to rock attacks. It turns red again on its own after 1 to 2 minutes, and right away under the Plantain Fan's gust; a charged Heavy Attack can also break that stone armor. Celestial soldiers fight in the arena and attack it too.

One set: a single fight, with no shrine or pause; its stone form is handled with the Plantain Fan and heavy attacks.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • No status: its described attacks are physical, tongue, leaps, belly flop, kicks, grab, croak and rocks; it is a frog of earth and stone.

Attacks to watch

  • Croak: in range, it stuns you for a moment and hurts you, and it lasts. Get away, or slip behind it with Cloud Step.
  • Stone form: it punches the ground to heave the earth under you, raises rocks then hurls them after a croak, or makes a ring of stone spikes burst out. Back off as soon as it grabs the ground or gets ready to croak.
  • Tongue whip: it stays in place, head raised, and sweeps from side to side. Dodge or dash out of range.
  • Leap, then a crushing belly flop: don't stay under it.
  • Behind it, it turns around to kick; it also chains 2 strikes and a stomp, signaled by a raised arm: back off or dodge.

What works

  • Plantain Fan: it turns it red again at once and pushes it back again and again; stay close during the gust to keep hitting. Plantain Fan
  • Against its stone form, heavy attacks: charged, the Heavy Attack breaks that form, and Cloud Step lets you charge it safely; in stone, your heavy attacks also knock it down. Umbral Abyss deals damage while you wait for it to turn red, then follow with running heavy attacks. Cloud Step, Umbral Abyss
  • Back to red, it is vulnerable: unleash all your spells then to finish it quickly. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize
  • Against its rocks, Cloud Step, or Rock Solid in place of Cloud Step, helps you avoid them. Cloud Step, Rock Solid

Strategy

  • Let the celestial soldiers keep it busy: while it fights them, hit it.
  • If its stone form comes back while the Plantain Fan isn't recharged, back off and avoid its attacks until it turns red again: it's when you die most easily.
  • It is below the Gold Armored Rhino's arena: the Rhino Watch Slope shrine serves both. Gold Armored Rhino

Access

Foothills, at the foot of the Rhino Watch Slope cliff. After the Supreme Celestial Inspector, fly down on the Somersault Cloud toward the big lake, then follow the right-hand wall to a brown, parched patch of land, in the corner of the lake closest to the cliff you started from; from the Gold Armored Rhino's arena, it is the muddy clearing below, on the side opposite the shrine. Get off the cloud: it appears, along with celestial soldiers. Optional: it is the game's 6th and last frog, and the strongest.

What it gives

Will: 2,670

The Celestial Birthstone Fragment, a Legendary curio, makes your banes ignore the enemy's resistance: precious for a build that inflicts Burn, Poison, Shock or Chill, for example with Golden Lining against Erlang, the Sacred Divinity.

Its Tadpole is the last of the 6, one per frog: they evolve the Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang spirit into Baw-Baw-Lang-Lang.

It counts toward "The Clamor of Frogs" trophy: the game's 6 frogs, one per chapter.

Updates

Update 1.0.13: fixed Lang-Baw-Baw being unable to engage in combat under certain conditions. Update 1.0.9: fixed the Tadpole sometimes not dropping; players who had beaten the boss without receiving it find it in their inventory after the update.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
