Recommended gear
With what you can get before this boss, in your first cycle.
Editor's pick Do the Stone Vanguard first: his Galeguard set can be crafted right away, and Windseal Gate, right after, brings A Pluck of Many. Otherwise, the Ebongold set with the Wind Bear Staff makes a good package around Cloud Step, useful against his vanishing.

The fight
A single health bar, but he changes pattern along the way: around half health, he vanishes into his stone form to burst out elsewhere, and below the last third, he draws his saber much more often. No change of element.
One set: no shrine or checkpoint during the fight, and no change of element.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- No status effect reported: physical blows and blood projectiles.
Attacks to watch
- Stone form: he becomes invulnerable; if you hit him, your staff bounces off and he counters with a punch. Don't hit: charge a heavy attack and release it as he comes out. On all fours, he vanishes then bursts out elsewhere with a long-range punch; with your back to a wall, he can't appear behind you.
- Lightning draw: he crouches, two fingers before his face, his hand on the hilt, then dashes; this blow can take more than half your health. Dodge as soon as the camera has finished pulling back.
- Saber combos, with a fake spin that delays the last hit, often followed by a second string of three slashes.
- Blood tornadoes and waves if you stay at range: they can't be deflected, stay close.
What works
- Immobilize on the lightning draw, or to cut a saber string short. Immobilize
- Cloud Step against his vanish-and-punch; the Unveiling Strike can make him stagger mid-combo. Cloud Step
- Red Tides and the Guangmou spirit; the Earth Wolf can interrupt him and pin him against a wall. Red Tides, Guangmou, Earth Wolf
- Before going in: Evil Repelling Medicament and Tiger Subduing Pellets. Evil Repelling Medicament, Tiger Subduing Pellets
Strategy
- Stay glued to him: at range, he chains tornadoes and big saber strikes.
- Do the Stone Vanguard before him: his Galeguard set can be crafted right away.
Access
Temple Entrance, Crouching Tiger Temple: from the shrine, climb the stairs; he waits at the top, in a pool of blood. You get there from the Valley of Despair, through the cave and a crack in the rock wall. Mandatory: he holds one of the two keys to the Yellow Wind Sage's path.
What it gives
- to obtainKeenness of Tiger
- to obtainRock Solid
- to obtainYaoguai Core × 2
- to obtainMind Core
Will: 1,354
The Headless Monk hands you Rock Solid after the fight. The Keenness of Tiger is one of the two keys to the Yellow Wind Sage's path.

In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the Vanguards' keys, the Loong Scales and quest items must be taken again.
