Recommended gear
With what you can have when you first come across it.
Editor's pick Poison Resistance wherever possible: the Guangmou spirit gives some, so does the Gall Gem with every sip, and Azure Dust makes you immune to Poison. The Galeguard set, unlocked just before, remains the sturdiest.

The fight
A single phase. He covers the ground with poisonous blood pools and can soak them back up to regain health: red lines then link the eyes on his back to the pools.
One set: Poison is there from start to finish.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- Poison: blood pools thrown around him and blood projectiles; getting caught in the splash poisons you at once, and the red areas can poison you too.
Attacks to watch
- A shout and his staff planted in the ground: a rain of blood pools falls around him; move away as soon as the staff hits the ground.
- Blood spray from his staff, in an arc in front of him: get behind him.
- Homing projectiles fired by the eyes on his back: dodge them, or destroy them by spinning your staff.
What works
- Interrupt his healing: Immobilize, or a strong spirit attack. Immobilize, Wandering Wight
- Antimiasma Powder: removes Poison and briefly raises Poison Resistance. Antimiasma Powder
- Azure Dust: the transformation makes you immune to Poison. Azure Dust
Strategy
- Pin him against a wall: it limits his sprays and projectiles.
- Never stand in the red pools, and don't let him heal.
Access
Windseal Gate, Yellow Wind Formation: take the path left of the shrine; he stands at its end, in front of a tree. You reach this shrine by sliding down from Rock Clash Platform, behind the Stone Vanguard's arena. Optional.

In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the Vanguards' keys, the Loong Scales and quest items must be taken again.
