Editor's pick Against his Poison: the Non-Pure Gauntlets and Greaves, the Cuo Jin-Yin Belt Hook, the Gall Gem and the Commander Beetle spirit raise your resistance, and Azure Dust makes you immune to the Four Banes while transformed. The golden mask and shirt raise your Attack right after your spirit attack or the Wind Tamer, and the 2 Non-Pure pieces cut the damage you take as you exit your spirit or transformation; these 4 pieces need 6 Fine Gold Thread, otherwise take the alternative pieces. Maitreya's Orb saves you from a fatal blow after enough successful hits; as a second choice, the Spider Celestial Staff makes you inflict Poison Bane while you are poisoned, but needs, on top of the Chitin Staff, 4 Gold Tree Cores and 8 Refined Iron Sand.

The fight

A single phase, against a fast and aggressive giant scorpion who alternates claw strikes and poisonous tail strikes. The more health he loses, the longer his combos get, and he eventually adds poison geysers. On your first try, he opens with a very long tail thrust; on later tries, he whirls away, then leaps at you.

One set: a single phase, and Poison from start to finish.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Poison: his stinger and tail poison you, his grabs inject a heavy dose, and his tail driven into the ground leaves puddles that explode into geysers. The poison can finish you off before you get to heal: bring plenty of Antimiasma Powder.

Attacks to watch

  • Long tail combo: his tail stands straight up and glows white, then chains an upward slash, a downward slam, a low sweep and a final, very powerful thrust from over his back. The timing punishes dodge spamming: dodge each hit at the right moment, or walk backward after his first 3 hits to avoid the rest.
  • Claw glowing yellow: a ground slam (dodge backward), a flurry of blows, or a rush ending in an uppercut. Against the rush, dodge sideways rather than forward: you'd often get stuck against him. When his claw stays stuck in the ground at the end of a combo, strike.
  • He dives underground: watch for the distortion in the ground and move away at the last moment. As he comes out, he often follows with a tail swipe that turns into a grab: it poisons you and can kill you in one hit. Don't get greedy when he resurfaces.
  • If you stay away too long, he stabs you from afar with his tail: about half your health, and poison left on the ground. His tail reaches far: only back off long enough to drink.
  • Tail driven into the ground: poison puddles form all around, then explode into geysers over a wider area than the puddles. Get out of every puddle and only come back after the blast.

What works

  • Opening burst: A Pluck of Many right away, Immobilize, then the Wandering Wight's spirit attack from behind. Keep up light attacks while your duplicates keep him busy, then use your transformation and close in again with Cloud Step. Aim to bring him below 20% health before you run out of spells. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step
  • Antimiasma Powder: it removes Poison and briefly raises your Poison Resistance; keep it on a shortcut. A chest near Hong Yi, at the start of the area, holds 3, and the Valley of Blooms shrine sells it. Antimiasma Powder
  • Rock Solid, instead of Cloud Step, deflects his opening leap, and his claw rush if you react early. Rock Solid
  • Hoarfrost or Umbral Abyss to freeze him and slow him down; the Non-Void spirit, which steps back while turning intangible, to escape his combos. Hoarfrost, Umbral Abyss, Non-Void

Strategy

  • Watch the color: yellow claw, claw attack; green tail, tail attack. Some combos mix both.
  • He breaks free of Immobilize quickly: follow up with a strong hit at once. Heavy attacks and the last hit of a light combo interrupt most of his combos.
  • Do a few runs where you only dodge to learn his patterns before spending your medicines. Once hit, back off and heal to full: a second hit would likely kill you.

Access

Purple Cloud Mountain, the secret area that opens after your second win over the Venom Daoist, through the mural the Daoist then points out. From the Valley of Blooms shrine, keep right to the Bounds of Deity's Abode shrine, then climb the stairs: the Scorpionlord is drinking on the roof of a small building and asks you to leave him alone. Break one of the wine jars in front of the building to start the fight. Optional.

What it gives

Will: 2,589

Unlocks

The Stained Jade Gourd makes you drink much faster, for 7 sips, and can't be upgraded at the Shen Monkey. It counts toward the "Brewer's Bounty" trophy on PS5, and toward the "Gourds Gathered" achievement on PC and Xbox.

The Deathstinger unlocks the Venomous Sting Insect Armor, part of the Insect Armor Set: it considerably raises the damage of your Poison-inflicting attacks.

His other materials differ between records: 2 Fine Gold Thread, or 1 Gold Tree Core and 1 Refined Iron Sand. The chest he was guarding holds Loong Aura Amplification Pellets.

The Sky-Piercing Horn goes into the Adept Spine-Shooting Fuban Staff, which can only be forged in New Game+ and needs 4 of them.

Updates

Update 1.0.9: the Insect Armor Set, whose chest piece is crafted from his Deathstinger, now considerably increases the duration of all medicine effects. No update changes the fight itself.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
