Recommended gear

With what you can have when you first come across it.

Editor's pick Same base as against the Scorpionlord: his Poison only comes in the second phase, Azure Dust is immune to it, and Red Tides is the other recommended transformation. If you've already beaten the Scorpionlord, his Deathstinger lets you craft the Venomous Sting Insect Armor (2 Fine Gold Thread, 5 Cold Iron Leaves), which resists Poison better than the golden shirt but costs you the 2-piece golden bonus, and his Stained Jade Gourd makes you drink much faster. The golden mask and shirt, along with the 2 Non-Pure pieces, need 6 Fine Gold Thread, otherwise take the alternative pieces; as a second choice, the Spider Celestial Staff needs, on top of the Chitin Staff, 4 Gold Tree Cores and 8 Refined Iron Sand.

The fight

2 phases, each with a full health bar, back to back with just a cutscene in between. 1: human form, sword and martial arts, a stronger version of the Sword Daoists. 2: once his first bar is empty, he swallows the Violet Hail and becomes a Worm Practitioner, clumsier but with more reach, spreading poison. He has little health and doesn't hit hard. Once he is beaten, Hong Yi, the snake woman from the start of the area, pulls the Violet Hail out of his body and gives it to you.

One set: no shrine or checkpoint between the 2 phases, so your defense against the second phase's Poison is set before the fight.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Poison, in his second phase: his long poisonous appendage and the poison he spews across the arena, which leaves clouds on the ground. Keep Antimiasma Powder at hand.

Attacks to watch

  • First phase, sword combo: a reverse-grip upward slash that sends a wave, a lunging thrust, then a spinning sweep with one last wave.
  • First phase: 2 quick punches, then a spinning back kick that hits hard. Stay out of reach of his fast kick and sword strings.
  • Second phase: he arches back for a long moment, then runs at you spewing poison in every direction and ends with a poison burst. Keep your distance, or push him back with a charged thrust.
  • Second phase: thrusts and ground-dragging swipes with his long poisonous appendage; his staggering moves are hard to predict, but slow.

What works

  • A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, the Wind Tamer and the Wandering Wight's spirit attack, in both his phases: he is frail and easy to interrupt, and every spell staggers him hard. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, Wind Tamer, Wandering Wight
  • Antimiasma Powder against his second phase's Poison: it removes it and briefly raises your Poison Resistance. Antimiasma Powder
  • Rock Solid, instead of Cloud Step, deflects all his first-phase attacks. Rock Solid
  • In the second phase, Thrust Stance or Pillar Stance to hit from afar, out of his poison clouds. Thrust Stance, Pillar Stance

Strategy

  • He is frail and easy to interrupt: in the first phase, keep the pressure on with your transformation, and save your mana for Immobilize and A Pluck of Many in the second, far more dangerous phase.
  • His attacks are easy to dodge and don't hit hard: the real danger is his second phase's poison.
  • You can beat him before the Scorpionlord: his Violet Hail, immune to Poison, is very useful against bosses that poison you.

Access

Purple Cloud Mountain, the secret area that opens after your second win over the Venom Daoist. From the Valley of Blooms shrine, cross the bridge and keep left to the Petalfall Hamlet shrine. From there, cross the small bridge and climb the stairs: Daoist Mi, masked, plays the flute on your left. Talk to him, then kill the hamlet's yellow-robed Daoists until one of them drops the Violet Hail key item, at random; rest at the shrine to bring them back. Bring it to him: he attacks you. Optional.

What it gives

Will: 1,469

Violet Hail turns you into a worm guai immune to Poison, each of whose attacks inflicts Poison Bane. Hong Yi hands it to you right after the fight.

His material differs between records: most often 1 Refined Iron Sand, sometimes Cold Iron Leaves and 2 Silk.

His journal entry counts toward the "Portraits Perfected" trophy. On PS5, Violet Hail counts toward "Fickle Forms"; on PC and Xbox, it counts toward "Full of Forms", and his quest unlocks "The Wayward Ways".

Updates

Update 1.0.8: fixed his quest icon, which stayed on the Travel menu after the quest could no longer be completed. No update changes the fight itself.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
