With what you can have when you first come across it.

Editor's pick Against its Poison: Non-Pure Gauntlets and Greaves (or your Serpentscale pieces), the Cuo Jin-Yin Belt Hook, the Gall Gem and the Commander Beetle spirit raise your resistance, and Azure Dust makes you immune to the Four Banes while transformed. The Chitin Staff is the safe choice: its upgrade, the Spider Celestial Staff, makes your hits inflict Poison Bane while you are poisoned, but also needs 4 Gold Tree Cores and 8 Refined Iron Sand. The golden mask and shirt reward your spirit attack; each golden or Non-Pure piece needs Fine Gold Thread, otherwise take See No Evil and your scale pieces.

The fight

A single phase. It fights almost like the Fungiman you face in the Pagoda Realm, with more health and damage: poison clouds, toxic strands that track you, geysers and a spin. Slow, it is easy to deflect, stagger and counter.

One set: a single phase, and Poison from start to finish.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Poison: as it springs out, it floods the area with poison, and does it again later; its toxic strands track you, and poison geysers burst out when it slams its staff into the ground or lands from a flight.

Attacks to watch

  • Poison clouds: when it appears, then several times during the fight, toxic fumes rise around it; back off as soon as they appear.
  • Toxic strands thrown from its side, which track you: sweep them away with the staff spin.
  • Staff slammed into the ground, or a flight followed by a crash from the sky: poison geysers burst out and release more projectiles.
  • A fast spin that chases you: keep your distance or immobilize it; it is dizzy afterward, strike then.

What works

  • A Pluck of Many and Immobilize, then normal combos; deflect its strikes to stagger it. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize
  • Rock Solid, if you take it instead of Cloud Step, against its staff swings. Rock Solid
  • Antimiasma Powder: it removes Poison and briefly raises your Poison Resistance; Keeper's Shrines sell it. Antimiasma Powder
  • To take it down fast: A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, a light combo, the Wandering Wight's attack, Cloud Step, then your transformation. Wandering Wight, Cloud Step

Strategy

  • Stay on the offensive: the less breathing room it gets, the fewer spore projectiles it throws.
  • When the toxic fumes rise, back off and switch to Thrust Stance.
  • Despite its health, it has few more moves than a regular enemy: cast your spells right from the start.

Access

Temple of Yellow Flowers, Court of Illumination shrine: turn around, leave through the gate guarded by 2 Staff Daoists and climb the mountain trail. At the fork at the top, go right (on the left, a slope leads down to the second Venom Daoist fight) to a hut surrounded by mushrooms: try to pick one, and it springs out. Hidden boss, optional.

What it gives

Will: 1,435

A single seed, but it counts as 2 plants once entrusted to Chen Loong, in Zodiac Village: Monkey-Head Fungus and Snake-Head Mushroom.

The Fungiwoman spirit considerably raises your max Health but moderately lowers your max Stamina; when used, it drifts under a mushroom cap and rains down spores that track the enemy and can come back to heal you.

On the hut's table, pick up the Sunset of the Nine Skies drink: 35% of your max Health per sip and a lot of Qi.

It counts toward the "Souls in the Stalks" trophy, and its seed toward "Seeds to Sow". The common material varies between sources.

Updates

No published update changes this boss.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
