With what you can get before this boss, in your first cycle.

Editor's pick Against his Burn, the Fireproof Mantle, the Bronze Monkey Mask and Bronze Armguard and the Flame Orb, the Rusty-Gold Cart's drop, raise your resistance, and Azure Dust makes you immune to the Four Banes while transformed, enough to tank his clones. The 4 Bronze pieces deal extra damage when you crash an immobilization and then greatly shorten Immobilize's cooldown, which the Stranded Loong's Whisker extends after a sip; the Amber Prayer Beads speed up your Focus, for the heavy attacks that interrupt most of his moves. Spells, transformation and soaks stay the same against the Yaksha King on your first attempt, and Immobilize works on him too.

Base values, before upgrades, from the registry.

The Staff of Blazing Karma adds Defense and Burn Resistance: it needs Shigandang's Cloud-Patterned Stone Staff, the 3 Samadhi Fire Crystals of the Flint Chief, the Flint Vanguard and the Mother of Flamlings, 4 Gold Tree Cores and 30,000 Will. The Bishui Beast Staff needs a win over the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast, the Rat Sage Staff, 4 Gold Tree Cores, 8 Refined Iron Sand and 30,000 Will: 8 Cores for the two, so only one of them without a reserve from Chapter 4, and the Visionary Centipede Staff, if crafted during this chapter, takes 4 more; otherwise, keep the Chitin Staff.

If you beat the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast, the Bull King's Bracers and Greaves (1 Iron Horn each) also resist Burn and, worn together, raise your Defense for a moment when you're hit, but cost you the 4-piece Bronze bonus. With 4 horns per playthrough, you craft 3 pieces of the set at most in your first playthrough.

The fight

A fast fight against a very agile foe wielding a flaming spear: short combos, a thrown spear, fire breath and fire on the ground. He doesn't have much health. At half health, he flies out of reach and sends his clones, which dive at you and explode: 1, then 2, then 3, before he dives himself. After that, he repeats the same moves, more aggressive and with more reach, and leaves patches of fire on the ground.

One set: no shrine or break between his 2 phases, and the Yaksha King follows with no shrine after him.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Burn: many of his attacks burn, including his fire breath; in the second phase, the patches of fire he leaves on the ground burn you if you step in them. To put out the flames, chain dodges or roll on the ground.

Attacks to watch

  • Clones, his most dangerous attack: at half health, he flies out of reach and his clones dive at you one after another, then 2 and 3 at a time, before he dives himself. Back off to the far end of the arena, watch the clone coming at you and dodge at the last moment; double-dodge when several come at once.
  • Thrown spear: he spins it, then throws it, and it bounces around the arena as a ring of fire. Track it and keep moving; when he drops down to retrieve it, wait for its last return, then use his short pause to strike.
  • Close-range fire breath: when you hit him up close, he raises his left hand to his face, then spits fire in an arc in front of him. Only land a few hits, then back off.
  • He whirls his weapon while chanting, then unleashes a big burst of fire in front of him: move away, or time your dodge to stay close.
  • A sidestep, then 2 straight-line dashes: get your dodge ready from the sidestep, or deflect them with Rock Solid if you take it instead of Cloud Step.

What works

  • Heavy attacks: most of his moves can be interrupted by a heavy attack, and he staggers easily. Build Focus with cautious half-combos; Immobilize or a combo finisher stops him too. Immobilize
  • Spirits: the Wandering Wight and the Father of Stones deal heavy damage and stun him for a moment; Non-Able, with its quick animation, staggers him. Wandering Wight, Father of Stones, Non-Able
  • Against the clones: tank them in a transformation, activate the Fireproof Mantle to absorb most of the damage, or let your Cloud Step decoy draw some of the dives. Azure Dust, Fireproof Mantle, Cloud Step
  • Fireproof Mantle and Body-Cooling Powder: the Mantle limits his fire damage and, when activated, builds up your Focus; save its activation for the second phase, when the arena is on fire. The Powder removes Burn and briefly raises your resistance. Fireproof Mantle, Body-Cooling Powder

Strategy

  • Stay close: up close, you take advantage of his short pauses and he throws fewer projectiles; from afar, he sends fire along the ground at you.
  • Opening: A Pluck of Many, the Weaver's Needle if you wear it instead of the Fireproof Mantle, Immobilize, the Wandering Wight's attack and Cloud Step quickly wear down his health. Save your transformation to tank his clones, at half health. A Pluck of Many, Weaver's Needle, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step, Azure Dust
  • Before him, the cart quest and Bishui Cave give the Flame Orb and the Bull King pieces: their path, toward the Cooling Slope, starts as you head back down from this shrine. You can also do them after the story. Flame Orb, Bishui Cave

Access

Field of Fire, Fallen Furnace Crater shrine, reached after the iron-ball chase: move forward and climb the slope. Pingping talks to her father, the Bull King, then the truth comes out: Pingping is Red Boy, who transforms and starts the fight. Mandatory.

What it gives

Will: 4,356

He drops nothing: the Yaksha King follows at once, and the chapter's rewards come after him. Red Boy has his own journal entry, separate from the Yaksha King's.
