Coming back later: everything you can get in Chapter 6 without beating it.

Editor's pick Later in the chapter, the Jingubang, by far the strongest weapon in the game, and the 4 Monkey King pieces, among the most powerful in the game, raise your Critical Hit Chance right after a spell and shorten your spell cooldowns on each critical hit. These pieces don't resist Poison: the Cuo Jin-Yin Belt Hook, the Gall Gem, the Commander Beetle and Azure Dust take over, and the Non-Pure Gauntlets and Greaves remain an alternative, at the cost of the 5-piece bonus.

The 4 Monkey King pieces drop from the Gold Armored Rhino, the Cloudtreading Deer, the Feng-Tail General and the Emerald-Armed Mantis; you then get the Jingubang in the Water Curtain Cave, once you hold the 4 pieces: wear them to be sure to trigger the cutscene.

The fight

A short fight, with no phases or break, against a living rock: like the stone bosses and the flint bosses of Chapter 5, it charges, lunges and strikes with all its weight, constantly scattering orbs and clumps of poison that explode on the ground. All 4 have the same moves.

One set: each one is a short fight, with no break; between two, you can stop at a shrine, but their moves don't change.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Poison: most of its attacks poison you; it constantly throws small poison orbs around itself, and its clumps of poison explode shortly after hitting the ground.

Attacks to watch

  • Poisoned strike: clumps of poison form on its wrist, then it strikes and drops them in front of itself; dodge forward as it swings, then hit back.
  • Back leap: it jumps backward, scattering clumps of poison in front of itself; dodge sideways and come back from the flank.
  • Shake: it forms clumps on its head, then shakes them all around; strike while they form, and get away as soon as it starts shaking.
  • Burst and sweep: clumps on both wrists and arms raised, then a ground slam that releases a line of poison in front of it, so dodge sideways when it raises its arms; or a forearm sweeping the ground as it advances, leaving poison behind it, then a headbutt into the ground, so run far as soon as it lowers its forearm.
  • Charges: like the stone bosses, it lunges and strikes with all its weight; get out of the way just before it reaches you.

What works

  • Plantain Fan: thrown just before a poison attack, its hurricane follows it, staggers it and pushes it back for about 12 seconds; strike in the meantime. Plantain Fan
  • Immobilize once the fan wears off, to keep it in place and finish it quickly. Interrupt its poison attacks as often as you can: heavy attacks, Immobilize and the Plantain Fan make short work of it. Immobilize
  • Antimiasma Powder: keep it on a quick slot, it removes Poison and briefly raises your resistance. The Mount Huaguo shrines don't sell it: stock up beforehand. Antimiasma Powder

Strategy

  • A single win is enough for its journal entry, and so for the "Portraits Perfected" trophy; each one still yields its own loot, including 1 Mind Core. Poison Chief, Portraits Perfected
  • Despite its limited moveset, it can kill you quickly if you let your guard down, all the more as it covers the surroundings in poison.
  • Opening: A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, your spirit attack, Cloud Step, then your transformation can be enough to finish it. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, Cloud Step

Access

Foothills, 4 of them, all reached by Somersault Cloud, so after the Supreme Celestial Inspector. Each one looks like a big rock sitting in a clearing: get off the cloud and walk up to it to wake it. 2 are on the upper plateau, on the Verdant Path side: from the cliff edge where the Inspector leaves you, one to the left, on high ground by a pond; the other to the right, along the rock wall, on bare brown ground among the trees, not far from the Rhino Watch Slope shrine. The other 2 are on the Deer Sight Forest side: from that shrine, one as you head back toward the Verdant Path over the wooded land, before crossing the water; the other up high, to the right of the Cloudtreading Deer's area, in a clearing among the trees. Optional.

What it gives

Will: 2,017

Loot per Poison Chief: each of the 4 yields this same loot, so 4 Mind Cores, 4 Fine Gold Thread and 4 Cold Iron Leaves for all 4.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
