The fight
2 separate fights. A gauge above his health shows his guard: he blocks and parries your attacks with his blade until you break it. The first fight ends when he has lost half his health: he flees, and you can rest at the shrine before going after him. In the second, he is more aggressive with his frozen sword; when his guard breaks, he retreats in a mist and switches to 2 poison blades, no longer able to block, then often takes his frozen sword back before the end.
One set per fight: the Mindfulness Cliff shrine separates them, and the second adds a Poison phase plus the Fiery Gourd and Maitreya's Orb, found in between.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- Chill: the strikes of his frost blade, his ice trails and his lines of ice spikes. Bring Body-Warming Powder.
- Poison: 2 daggers thrown from the first fight; in the second, his poison blades, a dagger barrage and a spray of poison in your face. Bring Antimiasma Powder.
Attacks to watch
- Roll, then sweep: he crouches, rolls toward you, slides his blade up in a jump, pauses, then makes a very wide swing with his frost blade. Afterward, he holds his blade in front of him and blocks any counter.
- A shout, a rising thrust and a quick jab, then a raised leg: he dashes at you at full speed for 2 final strikes. Dodge them, or deflect them to throw him off balance.
- Blade twirled behind him: a dash with a rising slash, then a slam that leaves an ice trail; dodge to the side and hit his flank. In the second fight, he also drags his blade along the ground, then slashes up: a line of ice spikes shoots straight ahead.
- Second fight, poison blades: 2 slashes, then a pivoting dash that chases you if you back off; deflect it to stop him cold, or he turns around and throws a dagger barrage. He can also spin, then spit poison in your face: it can't be deflected, dodge sideways.
- If he blocks your combo with a louder sound, he strikes back at once: don't keep hammering his guard, or deflect right after his own deflection.
What works
- Immobilize: he can break free, and almost instantly while holding his poison blades. Save it for his frozen sword, and then hit him in the back, where he can't parry. Immobilize
- Red Tides: the transformation helps you keep up with his movements and deals heavy damage; avoid heavy attacks, which shorten the transformation. Red Tides
- In the second fight, the Fiery Gourd makes you immune to Chill for a while with each sip; otherwise, Ring of Fire, in place of Immobilize, gives you room to recover. Fiery Gourd, Ring of Fire
- Body-Warming Powder against Chill, Antimiasma Powder against Poison: bring both. Body-Warming Powder, Antimiasma Powder
Strategy
- Thrust Stance: it matches the reach of his long blade and lets you hit him from afar.
- Smash Stance: well timed, it "sees through" his attacks and hits him while he can't defend, and the heavy follow-up almost always gets past his guard. With his poison blades, his attacks are low: switch to Pillar Stance to strike from above.
- Rock Solid deflects his dashes: a deflected strike throws him off balance or stops him cold.
- After the second fight, meditate at the nearby Meditation Spot, The Track, Mindfulness Cliff: a free skill point.
Access
Valley of Ecstasy, Mindfulness Cliff. First fight: from the shrine, head north and cross the bridge; he appears on the main path. Second fight: further up the same path, about 1 minute's walk, in a large open area whose archway, at the far end, overlooks the valley; he waits on the right, by a Meditation Spot. Mandatory: he blocks the way into the Valley of Ecstasy.
