The fight
A duel against the village blacksmith. He opens by sharpening his blade, vanishes into the wind to reappear striking, roars to stun you and charges his blade to strike in a line. He hits hard and has a lot of health for this point of the game.
One set: the duel starts from a dialogue, with no shrine or pause during the fight.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- None of the Four Banes is reported: he strikes with his blade, and his roar stuns.
Attacks to watch
- At the start, he sharpens his blade: don't hit him, your attacks are deflected and feed a powerful area slam. Wait until he is done.
- Roar: if it hits you, you are stunned and he chains several hits, like an unavoidable grab. Stay out of its reach; if his grab lands, heal right away.
- He vanishes into the wind, then reappears striking, with a dash or from the air: get ready to dodge or parry with Rock Solid, and don't chase him, he vanishes again right away.
- Charged blade: he hits everything in a line in front of him. Dodge to his flank to create an opening.
What works
- A Pluck of Many, cast away from him so you aren't interrupted. A Pluck of Many
- Rock Solid: parry his attacks when he reappears. Rock Solid
- Wind Tamer: it knocks him back and greatly raises your Damage Reduction for a short time. Wind Tamer
- Hoarfrost, later in the chapter: its heavy attacks charge its Avalanche; use it away from him to pelt him with snowballs and aim for a freeze. Hoarfrost
Strategy
- Take medicines that reduce the damage you take.
- Spell Binder, later in the chapter: cast it at the very start of the duel, its Attack bonus depends on your mana; it then locks your other spells, vessels, transformation and spirit skills. Spell Binder
- He gets easier later on: he stays in the village after the story, you can come back to challenge him anytime.
Access
Zodiac Village (Ruyi Scroll), Village Entrance: from the shrine, follow the torch-lit path to the blacksmith, in the left corner of the village. Talk to him and choose to challenge him to a duel. Optional: you must first complete Chen Loong's quest.
What it gives
- to obtainEbon Flow
Unlocks
- to obtainCurio slots
- to obtainIron-Tough Armor
- to obtainIron-Tough Gauntlets
- to obtainIron-Tough Greaves
Ebon Flow turns you into Yin Tiger: you parry by holding the sword horizontally, and you can dash at foes like a gale.
Talk to him again after your win for one more curio slot. In NG+, one win per new cycle adds another, up to 5.
The Iron-Tough set becomes craftable: the Iron-Tough Armor, Gauntlets and Greaves. The Iron Horned Helm also needs The Duskveil's Horn, in Chapter 4.
Updates
Update 1.0.9: after entering a New Cycle, you can buy Fine Gold Thread from him.
In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
