Editor's pick The Chu-Bai Spear boosts Thrust Stance, recommended to hit him out of reach. His gauntlet struggles to deflect Ashen Slumber, Rock Solid deflects his combos, and the Fine China Tea Bowl helps your Stamina against his long strings.

The fight

A single phase. He wields a large monk's spade in long combos that cover a wide area, and his gauntlet can deflect your blows. His attacks are heavy, followed by clear pauses.

One set: nothing changes during the fight.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • No status effect reported: spade, gauntlet and leaps, physical damage.

Attacks to watch

  • Charged gauntlet: when his glove and arm tattoo glow, he deflects your blows; if you keep hitting, he counters, stuns you and follows with a spinning attack.
  • Long combo: 2 up-and-down rotations, 3 quick back-and-forth swings, then a final spinning leap. Without spare Stamina, it is hard to dodge it all.
  • Tornado: he charges with a war cry, spins 5 times, then ends with a leaping slash; his long final flourish lets you strike back.
  • High leap then an overhead slam; if he pulls his blade around as he recovers, 2 spinning slashes follow. Dodge backward as soon as he takes off.

What works

  • Transformations: his gauntlet is poor at deflecting their attacks. Ashen Slumber fits well: a long dodge, and its fire breath can't be blocked. Ashen Slumber
  • Thrust Stance: hit him from range, out of reach of his wide-sweeping spade. Thrust Stance
  • Immobilize, or deflect one hit of his combos with Rock Solid, to stop him cold; also punish the pauses after his heavy attacks. Immobilize, Rock Solid

Strategy

  • Don't spend your Focus while his glove glows: the blow would be deflected.
  • Against his leaping slash, wait about 1 second after he takes off, then use your heavy attack to See Through it.
  • After the fight, the meditation spot in his hall gives you a skill point.

Access

New Thunderclap Temple, between the Temple Entrance and Mahavira Hall shrines: in the large courtyard guarded by 2 Dark-faced Overlords, enter the small building on the right, at the foot of the Mahavira Hall stairs; he stands over a meditation spot. From the Mahavira Hall shrine, just go back down the stairs. Optional.

What it gives

Will: 890

Equipped, the Non-Pure spirit briefly raises your Damage Reduction after Rock Solid.

Updates

No update changes him. Since 1.0.13, he is part of the "Four Monks" gauntlet of the Challenge mode, open once you have finished the game.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
