With what you can have when you first come across it.

Editor's pick Its fireballs and the Flamlings' can burn you: the Fireproof Mantle, the Bronze Monkey Mask and the Bronze or Ebongold Armguard raise your Burn Resistance, as do, as alternatives, the Flint Vanguard spirit, met just before on the same path, the Clay Vajra and the Xiang River Goddess Gourd; the Bronze Buddha Pendant raises your Four Banes Resistance, Burn included, and Azure Dust makes you immune to them while transformed. Worn together, the Bronze mask and armguard deal extra damage when you crash an immobilization, and the Stranded Loong's Whisker extends your next Immobilize after a sip. The Amber Prayer Beads speed up your Focus, for the staff's finishers; the Golden shirt and the Non-Pure greaves take 3 Fine Gold Thread in all: without that thread, keep your Loongscale pieces.

The fight

A single fight, with no pause. It bursts out of the ground throwing fireballs, which land as patches that turn into Flamlings. It doesn't move: fireballs at range, a whip of its body up close. After a few hits, it screams: Flamlings emerge and fire right away, and it burrows, untargetable, until you have killed them all. This pattern repeats until it dies; after the first wave, it can come back while some Flamlings remain.

One set: a single fight, with no pause, and the fire lasts until the end.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Burn: its fireballs and those of the Flamlings, which bombard you throughout the fight, can burn you; Body-Cooling Powder helps against this Burn damage.

Attacks to watch

  • Emergence: it bursts out of the ground throwing fireballs; back off as soon as you have delivered the ores. Where they land, Flamlings appear: keep an eye on these patches as you move around.
  • Fireballs at range, similar to the Flamlings': it doesn't move, so get as close as you can to strike.
  • A whip of its body when you're up close: dodge it, and it smacks into the ground, stunned for a moment.
  • Flamlings: several emerge when it screams and fire right away; throughout the fight, they bombard you with fireballs.

What works

  • Take out the Flamlings first: it burrows, untargetable, and only comes back once they are all dead, at least in the first wave.
  • Immobilize it to curb its aggression, and chain staff combos to fill your gauge and land powerful finishers. Immobilize
  • Fireproof Mantle and Body-Cooling Powder against the fire damage from its fireballs and the Flamlings'. Fireproof Mantle, Body-Cooling Powder
  • A Pluck of Many, the Weaver's Needle if you wear it instead of the Fireproof Mantle, Immobilize, the Wandering Wight's attack, Cloud Step, then Umbral Abyss: this sequence is enough to take it down. A Pluck of Many, Weaver's Needle, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step, Umbral Abyss

Strategy

  • The Cooling Slope shrine is a little further down the same path: activate it before you summon the Mother, so you can come back quickly if you fail.
  • Before summoning it, take out the Flamlings around and those surrounding the nearby chest: they drop Flame Ore, and the chest holds Refined Iron Sand. Flame Ore, Refined Iron Sand
  • The Flame Mediator, a soak that moderately raises your Burn Resistance for a short time after each sip, drops at random from the Field of Fire's Searing-Fire and Scorching-Fire enemies: if you have one, equip it in place of the Stranded Loong's Whisker. Flame Mediator

Access

Field of Fire, further down the Flint Vanguard's passage: past its arena, go down the slope that starts behind it. In the next barren area, glowing patches lead to a chest: they are Flamlings. Go around the rock: in the middle of the clearing, which looks empty, a large glowing red patch marks the ground. Deliver 4 Flame Ore there, which must be in your inventory, to summon it. Optional.

What it gives

Will: 1,756

The Samadhi Fire Crystal is one of the 3 needed, along with those of the Flint Chief and the Flint Vanguard, for the Staff of Blazing Karma: this upgrade of the Cloud-Patterned Stone Staff also takes 4 Gold Tree Cores and 30,000 Will.

Its spirit gives you its form and summons 2 Flamlings, whose fire burns nearby foes; equipped, it moderately reduces the cooldown of all your spells.

The common material varies between sources, most often a Refined Iron Sand, sometimes Silk and Cold Iron Leaves.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
