Coming back later: everything you can get in Chapter 5 without beating it.

Editor's pick On your way back from Bishui Cave, you find it on your right as you come out: the Bull King's Bracers and Greaves, which each take one of The Bull King's Iron Horns, 2 Fine Gold Thread and 1 Celestial Ribbon, resist Burn and, worn together, moderately raise your Defense for a moment when you take damage. As an alternative, the Bull King's Shan Wen Armor takes the last 2 of the playthrough's 4 horns, 4 Fine Gold Thread and 2 Celestial Ribbons; if you lack the materials, keep the first set's pieces. The rest stays the same, Golden Embroidered Shirt included: it takes 2 Fine Gold Thread, otherwise keep your Loongscale Battlerobe.

The fight

A single fight, with no pause. It reuses the other frogs' moves, leaps, back kicks, body slams, a grab and tongue lashes, but with fire, and stays in place except for its leaps. Around half its health, it adds a fireball barrage, a fire jet and leaps that send out waves of fire in a circle.

One set: a single health bar, with no pause, and its fire lasts the whole fight.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Burn: its fire jet can burn you, and its fireball barrage, flaming rocks raining over the whole arena, deals heavy damage and severe Burn. Its flaming tongue, its leaps and its waves of fire also deal fire damage.

Attacks to watch

  • Flaming tongue: it whips it left to right or shoots it straight at you; jump over it or dodge. It stays in place during this move: dodge to the side, then strike.
  • Leap: 2 swipes, then it leaps onto you, and a small burst of fire erupts beneath it on landing. When it jumps with raised arms to pound the ground, get away from the impact area.
  • Fireball barrage, its most dangerous move: around half its health, it rears up toward the ceiling and spits them all around, over a wide area. Stay as far away as you can and watch where they land.
  • Frontal fire jet: get behind it and strike.
  • Second-half leaps: wherever it lands, small waves of fire spread out in a circle; as soon as it leaps, dodge and put some distance between you.

What works

  • Strike while it performs its attacks: it stays in place, except for its leaps.
  • Cloud Step: leave your decoy and quickly get behind it to strike. Cloud Step
  • Fireproof Mantle: equip it before the fight, it raises your Burn Resistance against its fire; activated, it makes you immune to Burn for a short time. Fireproof Mantle
  • Body-Cooling Powder: it instantly removes Burn and significantly raises your Burn Resistance for a short time. Without it, roll on the ground to put out the fire. Body-Cooling Powder

Strategy

  • If you go through the lit structure in the middle, you're teleported to Bishui Cave: you can come back to fight it. After the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast, you're brought back to this room anyway, and it then waits on your right. Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast
  • The Cooling Slope shrine, right in front of the frozen gate, is the closest: set up your gear before going through the gate.
  • No rush: the quest and Bishui Cave can be finished after the end of the story.

Access

Field of Fire, behind the Cooling Slope's frozen gate, a little past the shrine, on the right. The gate only opens at the end of the Five Element Carts quest: beat the Rusty-Gold Cart, which only appears in front of it if you exhausted the Pale-Axe Stalwart's dialogue at each of his locations, then talk one last time to the dying Pale-Axe Stalwart, to the right of the gate, and touch the gate. Most records also count the dialogue with the broken cart in the lava lake, at Valley Entrance, though not all: to be safe, exhaust it too, but only after talking to Ma Tianba in Chapters 1 to 4, or his quest is lost. Past the gate, go down the slope: it waits on the left, in the corner, before the lit structure in the middle that teleports you to Bishui Cave. No need to go in: it is in the room before it. Optional; it is the 5th of the 6 frogs of the "The Clamor of Frogs" achievement.

What it gives

Will: 1,750

The Tadpole is used to evolve the Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang spirit into Baw-Baw-Lang-Lang; all 6 frogs drop a Tadpole.

The common material varies between sources, most often a Refined Iron Sand, sometimes 2 Silk and Cold Iron Leaves.

Updates

Update 1.0.9: fixed the Tadpole sometimes failing to drop; affected players found it in their inventory.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
