With what you can have when you first come across it.

Editor's pick Its punches leave pools of lava and it throws fireballs: the Fireproof Mantle helps against these attacks, and without it, the Xiang River Goddess Gourd makes you immune to lava-covered ground for a short time after each sip. Stay close to build up Focus and knock it down with heavy attacks: the Amber Prayer Beads speed this up. The Mount Lingtai Seedlings extend the clones of A Pluck of Many, which helps clear out its reinforcements, and Umbral Abyss wraps up the sequence that takes it down; the Golden mask and shirt and the Non-Pure gauntlets and greaves take 6 Fine Gold Thread in all: without that thread, keep your Loongscale pieces.

The fight

A single fight, with no pause. It is a lava-rock copy of the Stone Vanguard of Yellow Wind Ridge: the same attacks, plus fire, and Searing-Fire and Scorching-Fire enemies that burst out as you approach to fight alongside it. Slow, it mainly strikes with its thick arms; when it gets enraged, it throws a barrage of fireballs.

One set: a single fight, with no pause.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • No status named: its punches leave pools of lava and it throws fireballs, fire damage. Against these attacks, bring the Fireproof Mantle and Body-Cooling Powder.

Attacks to watch

  • Ground-punch combos, sometimes both arms together: they can be dodged, and you can stay close until the lava pools appear; then dash away.
  • A sweep that reaches both its sides: right behind it, you avoid both its punches and this sweep.
  • A leap over to you, then a slam. Once it lands, don't attack right away: it sets off an area blast, then lunges forward.
  • Fireballs: a single one at a time when you back off, easy to dodge. Enraged, it slams its fists, shakes its head and throws a barrage of fireballs: run around to avoid as many as possible.
  • Reinforcements: the Searing-Fire and Scorching-Fire enemies with it can quickly overwhelm you.

What works

  • Take out its reinforcements first: circle the ring of rocks to lure them, then step into the middle to wake the boss; once the fight is on, lure them away or immobilize the boss while you kill them. A Pluck of Many also helps clear them out. Immobilize, A Pluck of Many
  • When it plunges both arms into the ground, it struggles to get back up: immobilize it then and unleash your most powerful attacks. Immobilize
  • Fireproof Mantle and Body-Cooling Powder: they help you against its punches and their lava pools. Fireproof Mantle, Body-Cooling Powder
  • A Pluck of Many, the Weaver's Needle if you wear it instead of the Fireproof Mantle, Immobilize, the Wandering Wight's attack, Cloud Step, then Umbral Abyss: this sequence is enough to take it down. A Pluck of Many, Weaver's Needle, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step, Umbral Abyss

Strategy

  • Stay close, right behind it if you can, and build up Focus for heavy attacks: they knock it down on all fours, vulnerable.
  • At the entrance of the passage, on the left, hug the rocks to pick the Luojia Fragrant Vine; a Searing-Fire leaps out as you get close. Luojia Fragrant Vine
  • No rush: fast travel between shrines, across chapters, lets you come back to fight it later, even once the story is over.

Access

Field of Fire. From the Ashen Pass III shrine, climb the path where the giant iron ball rolls, sheltering in the alcoves; at the end, a cutscene: Zhu Bajie knocks the ball off the cliff and Pingping puts out the big fire that lined the right side of the path. Then turn back, or set off from the Fallen Furnace Crater shrine, a little further on: halfway down the slope, where the wall of flames stood, a new passage opens on the left. Go down it to the clearing where glowing rocks form a circle: that's it, and it wakes up as you approach. Optional.

What it gives

Will: 2,208

The Samadhi Fire Crystal is one of the 3 needed, along with those of the Flint Chief and the Mother of Flamlings, for the Staff of Blazing Karma: this upgrade of the Cloud-Patterned Stone Staff also takes 4 Gold Tree Cores and 30,000 Will.

Its spirit gives you its form: your stone fists stack Scorch Bane, and an ignited target suffers Burn Damage over time. Equipped, it moderately increases your Scorch Damage and Burn Resistance.

The common material varies between sources, most often a Refined Iron Sand, sometimes Silk and Cold Iron Leaves.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
