The fight
3 separate fights. 1: around half health, he feigns surrender, then strikes back; he ends up fleeing, without you having to finish him. 2: same moves, plus Chill and no more fake surrender; he flees again, and the old master he was harassing teaches you Ring of Fire. 3: in the sack, a buffed, winged version that sends shadow clones; Zhu Bajie fights by your side, and your health, mana and gourd are refilled at the start.
One set per encounter: a shrine comes before each one. Chill is certain in the 2nd, and the 3rd follows the first Yellowbrow fight with no shrine in between: his Shock dictates the gear.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- Chill: certain from the 2nd encounter on, where he enchants his blade with frost, spins on his sword raising icicles and extends his reach with them. Bring Body-Warming Powder from the 1st.
- Poison: if you hit his face for too long, he vomits on you, with a heavy Poison buildup. In the 3rd encounter, his shadow clones spew poison too.
Attacks to watch
- Opener: he slams his blade down and sends a vacuum slash straight at you; dodge as it arrives.
- A leap, blade planted in the ground, then a flurry of claw swipes in front of him: he stays by his blade and can't pivot, step to the side and hit his flank.
- He grabs the blade with his foot, jumps onto the hilt, then rolls in a wide whirlwind slice before a final slam: don't press your attack during this combo, or Immobilize him before its second part.
- Fake surrender, in the 1st encounter: around half health, he jumps back and puts his hands together. It's a trap: he flicks his blade up with his tail and sends a vacuum slash. Keep your distance and dodge sideways.
- Encounter 3: he takes to the air and sends 2 shadow clones that stay to fight, then clones that dive at you; his feathers hang in the air, then all fly at you at once, a single well-timed dodge is enough.
What works
- Immobilize, A Pluck of Many, your transformation, then your spirit attack: in the first 2 encounters, he goes down in about 15 seconds. Immobilize, A Pluck of Many
- Body-Warming Powder: it removes Chill and briefly raises your Chill Resistance; the Frost-Clad Path shrine store sells it. Body-Warming Powder
- Red Tides and the Guangmou spirit: the Burn and Poison they inflict eat away at his health. Red Tides, Guangmou
- Encounter 3: Ashen Slumber and your spirit attack against the group of clones, to get rid of them quickly. Ashen Slumber
Strategy
- He staggers easily: build Focus with light combos, then hit hard. When he stands on his blade, 1 Focus Point is enough to knock him off.
- Encounter 2: the old master's circle of fire stops him. Move to the other side to heal or let a long combo pass.
- Encounter 3: when he summons his 2 shadow clones, take down the one Zhu Bajie isn't fighting first, then help Bajie; they have little health.
Access
3 encounters, all mandatory. 1: Snowhill Path, from the Frost-Clad Path shrine, follow the main path; he waits at the top of the hill. 2: Pagoda Realm, from the Warding Temple shrine, climb the stairs to the temple courtyard. 3: New Thunderclap Temple, past the Mahavira Hall shrine: when Yellowbrow is nearly beaten, he pulls you into his sack, where the Macaque Chief awaits.
What it gives

Updates
Update 1.0.9: fixed a bug that let you keep Ring of Fire's effect, his reward, active continuously.
In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
