Coming back later: everything you can get in Chapter 6 without beating it.
Editor's pick Later in the chapter, the Monkey King's Armor Set and the Jingubang, the best gear in the game, shorten the fight: the Jingubang keeps your 4th Focus Point, enough to hit the crystals with a 4-point Heavy Attack at each opening, and 3 pieces of the set raise your Critical Hit Chance after each spell, such as A Pluck of Many.

The fight
A single fight, on foot, against a stone giant buried up to the waist, which doesn't move: only the blue crystals on its fists and forearms take damage. It punches, sweeps and creates shockwaves; after some sequences, it rests its hands on the ground, exhausted: that's when to break the crystals, and it usually takes 2 or 3 openings. At 0 health, it still slams the ground 4 times in a row with shockwaves, then one last time: stay far away, one hit can kill you outright.
One set: a single fight, with no shrine or pause.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- No status: its described attacks are punches, sweeps, shockwaves and a suction.
Attacks to watch
- Crushing punches, which can kill you in one hit: back away as far as you can; it sometimes drags its hand along the ground after the impact, 1 or 2 times.
- Sweeps, right then left or back and forth, very powerful: stay out of range, at the edge of its shadow; they don't cover the whole arena.
- Double slam: 2 shockwaves sweep across the arena. Jump at the right time, ideally where the 2 waves meet, to clear both with a single jump; perched on your staff in Pillar Stance, you avoid them too.
- Suction: it inhales and pulls debris and you toward it. Run the other way; it doesn't hurt but moves you.
- Final sequence at 0 health: 4 slams in a row with shockwaves, then one last one. Keep your distance and dodge or jump each wave, or tank them while transformed.
What works
- Stay in front of it, just out of range: close enough that it attacks, far enough that it misses you. Avoid its sides.
- When it slams both hands on the ground twice in a row, it stays stunned for about 30 seconds: rush the crystals, with heavy or quick attacks, and cast A Pluck of Many to multiply the hits. A Pluck of Many
- Pillar Stance: perched on your staff, you rise above its shockwaves. Pillar Stance
- Save your transformation for the final sequence: it tanks the shockwaves for you. Umbral Abyss
Strategy
- After the win, climb the arm it rests on the ground: a cutscene with the Mandrill Chief gives you the Skandha of Consciousness, then it buries itself again. Mandrill Chief, Skandha of Consciousness
- Missing a Skandha? You can go back to Chapters 1 to 4 at any time via the shrines, then come back here: nothing closes.
- No rush: you can fight it later in the chapter, with the Monkey King's Armor Set, or even after the end of the story, Jingubang in hand. Monkey King's Armor Set, Jingubang
Access
Foothills, at the far end of the area: fly on the Somersault Cloud behind the Son of Stones, to the clearing with water, a large rock and 2 golden trees; the Water Curtain Cave is on the left, go right of the water. Climb high: at the end of the path, an opening in the cliff leads, through a narrow passage and a tunnel, to a vast desert expanse and its huge rock. It only comes to life if you have the first 4 Skandhas in your inventory: the Skandha of Form (Chapter 1, Buddha head just before the Bullguard), the Skandha of Feeling (Chapter 2, dropped by Shigandang, whom the 6 Buddha's Eyeballs summon), the Skandha of Thought (Chapter 3, below the Mindfulness Cliff shrine) and the Skandha of Choice (Chapter 4, across a pond near the Purifying Spring shrine); otherwise, nothing happens. Optional and hidden; no need to beat the Son of Stones.
What it gives
- to obtainSkandha of Consciousness
It drops nothing: the Skandha of Consciousness, a key item, is obtained by climbing its arm after the win, which also adds the Giant Shigandang and the Mandrill Chief to the journal. No source gives the Will it yields.
With all 5 Skandhas, show them to Xu Dog, at the Crouching Tiger Temple's Cellar or in Zodiac Village, and ask him for the pill: you swallow the Five Skandhas Pill at once, which raises your Max Health, Max Mana and Max Stamina.
In a new cycle, key items aren't kept, and redoing the quest no longer grants these increases: the pill turns into Will.
Updates
Update 1.0.20: the fight against the Giant Shigandang was improved, with no further detail in the notes.
In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
