Editor's pick The full Yaksha Armor Set greatly raises the damage you deal, and the damage you take: it shortens this long fight against a very sturdy boss. The Thunderstone and the Thunderbolt Horn raise your Shock Resistance; the Amber Prayer Beads speed up your Focus, for the heavy attacks that break the horn, and the Chitin Staff gives you back a little health with each one.

Yaksha Armor Set: 12 Cold Iron Leaves, 6 Fine Gold Thread and 29,100 Will for the 4 pieces. In Chapter 6, the Supreme Celestial Inspector gives 2 Fine Gold Thread, the shrines sell 2, and several optional bosses drop 1 each: the Jiao-Loong of Waves, each of the 4 Poison Chiefs, the Son of Stones and Lang-Baw-Baw. If you're short, wear the Loongscale pieces: the armguard and greaves raise your Shock Resistance, and the 3 pieces together greatly shorten the Shocked state.
For the weapon, the Bishui Beast Staff or the Staff of Blazing Karma if you have their materials: 4 Gold Tree Cores each; the Supreme Celestial Inspector gave you 2 and the shrines sell 1. Otherwise, keep the Chitin Staff.
Without the Wandering Wight, which can be missed in Chapter 1, take the Red-Haired Yaksha, which strengthens your heavy attacks. The Golden Mask of Fury gives back a lot of Focus when your spirit attack lands, enough to follow up on the horn. Golden Lining makes you immune to Shock, and Dark Thunder to lightning damage, while transformed.
The fight
A single fight, a single health bar, all about its horn. With its horn intact, it has very high Defense and your blows bounce off. A well-charged Heavy Attack or the Wandering Wight's attack breaks it: it goes down for a good while, its Defense drops sharply and it loses its electric powers for a time. Later, it roars, rears up and calls lightning down around itself, then across the whole arena: its horn grows back, and it all starts over.
One set: a single fight, with no shrine or pause; the Rhino Watch Slope shrine is right before the arena.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- Shock: its electrified horn strikes with lightning, in its charges as in its stomps, and lightning falls across the whole arena when its horn grows back.
Attacks to watch
- Repeated charges, about 3 in a row, after a run around the arena: keep your distance and dodge sideways at the right moment. Don't chase it, and hold Immobilize: cast during a charge, it is often wasted. The arena's rocks shelter you while they last.
- Horn regrowth: it roars, rears up, and lightning strikes around it, then across the whole field. Get away as soon as yellow lightning forms around it.
- It digs its horn in and drags it along the ground, then flings rocks, often 5: step aside, aiming for the gap between them, or dodge forward to go hit it.
- Horn swipe: it pulls its head back, then sweeps to the side. Dodge opposite to its head's movement, or backward; with the talent that grants it, these dodges earn you Focus.
- Behind it, it kicks with its hind legs: dodge sideways. It also rears up to stomp, with short reach: don't stay glued to it; when lightning comes with the stomp, dodge sideways, then backward.
What works
- Break the horn with a charged Heavy Attack: at 3 Focus Points in Thrust Stance when it faces you or rushes at you, or at 4 points. The best moment: when it moves slowly, sparks around its horn. Thrust Stance
- Wandering Wight: its spirit attack breaks the horn or knocks it down. With its horn broken, it tries to get away: Immobilize keeps it in place. Wandering Wight, Immobilize
- Open with A Pluck of Many and Immobilize, then Umbral Abyss: the Macaque Chief's heavy attacks break the horn quickly. If you carry the Weaver's Needle instead of the Plantain Fan, use it right after Immobilize: this sequence should then take it below half health. Once the horn has grown back, wait for the transformation to recharge to break it again. With its horn broken, the Plantain Fan and your clones knock it over again and again. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, Umbral Abyss, Weaver's Needle, Plantain Fan
- Shock Resistance: at Xu Dog, spend your Mind Cores on celestial medicines for Shock Resistance, Defense and Health. You can redistribute them later, and 6 Mind Cores are for sale at Chapter 6 shrines. Wujin Pill, No-Mind Medicament, Jade Lotus Pill, Mind Core
Strategy
- A long fight: it has a huge amount of health. The Might Fortification talent speeds up your transformation's recharge, to break the horn again more often with Umbral Abyss. Might Fortification, Umbral Abyss
- Its flanks and back only serve to build your Focus: it takes very little damage there, and behind it, it kicks. Save your damage for the horn.
- From the cliff's edge, follow the lightning on the right: it marks its arena and the Cloudtreading Deer's, and stops once both are down. Cloudtreading Deer
Access
Foothills, Rhino Watch Slope. After the Supreme Celestial Inspector, summon the Somersault Cloud at the cliff's edge, turn right and follow the cliffs at the same height, without flying down to the big lake, until a large parched area struck by lightning. First land on the grass at the edge of the battlefield, where the Rhino Watch Slope shrine stands by a large rock: walking toward the center triggers the cutscene, then the fight. Mandatory: it is one of the 4 bosses holding the Great Sage's armor pieces; with the Cloudtreading Deer and the Feng-Tail General, you beat it in any order, and the Emerald-Armed Mantis, the 4th, only appears once these 3 are down.
What it gives
- to obtainGold Suozi Armor
- to obtainCold Iron Leaves × 2
- to obtainFine Gold Thread
- to obtainMind Core
The Gold Suozi Armor is the chest piece of the Monkey King's Armor Set: Mythical, it adds 30 Max Health, with no unique effect. With 3 pieces of the set, your Critical Hit Chance rises for a short time after each spell; with all 5, the Jingubang included, each critical hit slightly reduces the cooldown of all your spells.
With the Great Sage's 3 other pieces, it leads you to the Jingubang, in the Water Curtain Cave: to be safe, wear all 4 pieces as you approach the great staff to trigger the cutscene.
It yields about 2,700 Will: recorded values range from 2,719 to 2,732.
