The fight
A single fight in two parts. Alone at first: as long as he carries the Wind Tamer, the Sage can't help you. At around two thirds of his health, he dives under the sand and chains attacks from below; the Sage then stuns him with the drum, you climb onto him up to the glowing Buddha head on his back and pull out the Wind Tamer. After that, the Sage fights at your side and regularly knocks him down.
One set: no shrine or checkpoint, and no change of element; only the tactics change, when the Sage joins you.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- No status effect reported: very heavy physical damage.
Attacks to watch
- Dive under the sand, then a burst out: dodge sideways just before impact, or run until he surfaces.
- A horn bursting out of the ground when he swims under you: keep moving, or rise above it in Pillar Stance.
- Rearing up, then a slam or a lunge: slow but wide; his attacks go in a straight line, dodge sideways.
- Front leg swipes: readable; stay outside his arms, not between them.
What works
- Aim for the front legs: the rest of his body is armored, no point hitting his back.
- Immobilize and A Pluck of Many work from the start; still keep enough to chain everything when the Sage knocks him down: Immobilize, A Pluck of Many, spirit, transformation. Immobilize, A Pluck of Many
- Thrust Stance to poke his legs from a distance, Pillar Stance against the underground attacks.
Strategy
- In the second part, let the Sage carry the damage and focus on surviving: heal as soon as you drop below half health.
- After his defeat, you are sent back to Rockrest Flat with the Wind Tamer.
Access
Sandgate Bound, Kingdom of Sahali: after the "Tiger Vanguard", climb up to the Yellow Wind Sage, who waits by a drum on the cliff, and talk to him: he beats the drum and Fuban bursts out of the sand. Optional.
What it gives
- to obtainWind Tamer
- to obtainSky-Piercing Horn
Unlocks
- to obtainMonastic Insect Hat
- to obtainInsect Spike Bracers
- to obtainInsect Spike Gaiters
The Insect set unlocks, but its pieces need Cold Iron Leaves: the Kingdom of Sahali shrine shop sells 2, enough for the hat, or the bracers and gaiters, and the Yellow Wind Sage gives 2 more. Its chest piece waits until Chapter 4.
Updates
No update changes the fight; 1.0.9 buffed the Insect set (medicine duration) and 1.0.13 made the Wind Tamer more effective against Non-Void, in Chapter 3.
In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the Vanguards' keys, the Loong Scales and quest items must be taken again.
