The fight
A single health bar, and Shock from start to finish. At around 60% and then 20% of his health, he charges himself with electricity and pounds the ground in rhythm: shock rings spread out, then comes a final fast aftershock.
One set: the element never changes, build it against Shock.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- Shock: electrified mace hits, explosions and electric waves. While shocked, you take more damage.
Attacks to watch
- Ground pounding, at around 60% and 20%: get away, jump the first close ring and dodge the second; when energy gathers in his weapon, the last aftershock is coming: heal before it, or take it transformed. Standing on an intact rock, the waves can't reach you.
- Sandstorm followed by an electric explosion: Cloud Step cancels it, otherwise get out of the area.
- Mace twirls that fire projectiles, then an explosive clap with a shockwave: back off and jump the wave.
- Weapon clash right next to him, with small-radius electric explosions: don't stay glued to him.
What works
- Shock-Quelling Powder: removes Shock and briefly raises Shock Resistance. Shock-Quelling Powder
- Keep the arena's rocks intact: don't lure him into them, they're your shelter during the pounding.
- Immobilize at the start; later in the chapter, A Pluck of Many right after the pounding. Immobilize, A Pluck of Many
- Wind Tamer, if you finished the secret area: it dispels the sandstorm and stuns him. Wind Tamer
Strategy
- Punish his long wind-ups with heavy attacks in Smash or Thrust Stance.
- Too hard? He is optional: come back after Chapter 3, where a Loongscale armor reduces Shock.
Access
Hidden Loong Cavern, Fright Cliff: from the Rockrest Flat shrine, climb the stairs on the right to a sand waterfall; with the Loong Scales in your inventory, interact with it to dispel it. Optional and hidden.
What it gives
- to obtainRefined Iron Sand × 2
- to obtainMind Core
- to obtainLoong Pearl
- to obtainThunderbone
- to obtainTridacna Pendant
Will: 1,591
The Tridacna Pendant slightly reduces the cooldown of all spells. The Thunderbone and the Red Loong's Thunder Tail are used for the Loongwreathe Staff, which also needs 4 Refined Iron Sand and 21,000 Will. Chapter 2 provides those 4 sands: 2 here, 1 sold at the Kingdom of Sahali shrine and 1 from the Yellow Wind Sage; before the Sage, you have 3 at most.
Updates
No published update changes this boss; the loong fixes in 1.0.13 target the Yellow Loong.
In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the Vanguards' keys, the Loong Scales and quest items must be taken again.
