With what you can have when you first come across it.
Editor's pick From 2 pieces, the Golden set raises your Attack right after a spirit attack or a vessel, exactly what cancels its guard, and the mask grants a lot of Focus after a spirit attack lands; the 4 pieces need 6 Fine Gold Thread, and the Non-Pure pieces need some too: if you are short, fill in with your Loongscale pieces. The Chitin Staff is the safe choice: its upgrade, the Spider Celestial Staff, also needs 4 Gold Tree Cores and 8 Refined Iron Sand. With the Iron Pellet, its students can no longer interrupt your sips.

The fight
A fairly straightforward fight, but it is not alone: 6 Sword Daoists fight alongside it and respawn until it is beaten. It wields 2 blades: slams that open fissures, ranged slicing waves, whirlwinds, and a guard that soaks your hits before a counterattack.
One set: a single phase, with no shrine or pause.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- No confirmed status: the detailed descriptions of its attacks (blade strikes, fissures, slicing waves, projectiles) mention none; a single source says its projectiles deal poison, and the staff spin deflects them.
Attacks to watch
- A backhanded lunge, then a pause, then a whirlwind of blades all around it: don't attack during the pause, get away.
- Slams of its big left blade: a thin line runs along the ground, then a wide fissure erupts, several times in a row. Keep it in view even while dealing with its students.
- Its big blade also sends ranged slicing waves, faster than its slams, and its sweeps carry on as a wave: get away rather than stay glued to it.
- Guard: it jumps back, speaks, then raises its left blade in a reverse grip in front of its face. It then soaks your hits, even while immobilized, and counters with 2 strikes if you keep at it.
- Diving headbutt: when it lands on its side, don't hit it, it gets back up spinning with both blades.
What works
- A Pluck of Many right as you arrive: your duplicates keep the students busy while you focus on it; immobilize the student in front of you first, then cast it. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize
- When it raises its guard, the Wandering Wight's attack or the Wind Tamer knock it back and cancel the guard. Save Immobilize for another moment, it soaks hits even while frozen. Wandering Wight, Wind Tamer
- Rock Solid, if you take it instead of Cloud Step, deflects its 2-strike counterattack. Rock Solid
- To take it down fast: A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, a light combo, the Wandering Wight's attack, Cloud Step, then your transformation. Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step
Strategy
- 2 approaches: clear its students first, who have little health but respawn while it lives, or rush it with your spells.
- Its strikes are slow and easy to read: stay aggressive while your duplicates keep its students busy.
- Its projectiles swarm around it: the staff spin deflects them.
Access
Temple of Yellow Flowers, Forest of Ferocity shrine: follow the main path and climb the stairs; it trains its students, Sword Daoists, in a large courtyard on the right. The fight starts when you get close. Optional.
What it gives
- to obtainCommander Beetle
- to obtainKnot of Voidness
- to obtainRefined Iron Sand
- to obtainTablet of the Three Supreme
Will: 1,441
The Commander Beetle spirit spins its 2 blades to hit all nearby enemies; equipped, it moderately raises your Poison Resistance.
The small chest behind it, in the building where it stood, holds the Tablet of the Three Supreme: much higher Critical Hit Chance when your health is low.
The Knot of Voidness and the spirit are certain; the common material varies between sources, most often a Refined Iron Sand, sometimes Cold Iron Leaves and 2 Silk. Its students, the Sword Daoists, can drop the Fruit of Dao soak.
