Editor's pick Ebongold set and Twin Serpents Staff, recommended against him, with the Wandering Wight spirit. The Wind Bear Staff (50 Attack against 40) does better if you could craft it.

The fight

A single phase, slow and predictable; he summons Pitstones that leap at you and explode.

One set: nothing changes during the fight, and the shrine is right before the arena.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • No status effect reported: fists, rocks and stone spikes.

Attacks to watch

  • Two-armed ground slam, then stone spikes: his body glows; back off at once, or hop over them in Pillar Stance.
  • A leap followed by a slam on your position: move away as soon as the jump starts.
  • Two quick punches on the ground: the Pitstones are coming; chain sideways dodges, then dodge his final rush.
  • Long-range rock throw: dodge sideways up close, backward from afar.

What works

  • Immobilize and the Wandering Wight's attack stun him: use them after one of his attacks. Immobilize, Wandering Wight
  • Cloud Step against the leap and slam. Cloud Step
  • Charged heavy attack with at least 3 Focus points: the reliable way to make him stagger.

Strategy

  • Dodge sideways and punish with light combos; don't get greedy despite his slowness.
  • Red Tides helps you take hits, but he is immune to its Burn.
  • After him, his armor can be crafted at any shrine: the Galeguard set, the sturdiest full set you can craft in Chapter 2.

Access

Rockrest Flat, Fright Cliff: from the shrine, take the left path to a large open area; he bursts out of the rocks as you approach. Mandatory: he holds one of the two keys to the Yellow Wind Sage's path. You can also reach him from Windrest Hamlet, through the cave past the Tiger's Acolyte.

What it gives

Will: 1,375

Unlocks

The Sternness of Stone is one of the two keys, with the Keenness of Tiger, that open the Yellow Wind Sage's path.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the Vanguards' keys, the Loong Scales and quest items must be taken again.
