The fight

A short fight: he has little health, and his slow blows are easy to dodge.

One set: a short fight with no changes; the Mother of Stones is a separate fight, with a trip back to the shrine in between.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • No status effect reported.

Attacks to watch

  • His blows are slow but powerful: dodge, then punish.

What works

  • The Wandering Wight spirit: in this tight space, its attack almost always lands. Wandering Wight
  • Your spells from the start: he falls in seconds. Immobilize

Strategy

  • Rest at the shrine after winning: he opens his shop (including Iron Pellet, Goldflora Hairpin, Sobering Stone, Blood of the Iron Bull). Iron Pellet, Sobering Stone
  • The Azure Dust he gives makes you immune to the Four Banes during the transformation: valuable against the chapter's Shock and Poison. Azure Dust

Access

Squall Hideout, Fright Cliff: from the shrine, go right, drop into the ravine and follow it to the dead end with black thorns. Talk to him, beat the Mother of Stones, then bring him the Stone Essence: he keeps it, comes out of the ground, and you have to attack him. Optional.

What it gives

Azure Dust, by interacting with his body after the fight. His shop opens afterwards.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the Vanguards' keys, the Loong Scales and quest items must be taken again.
