Recommended gear
With what you can get before this boss, in your first cycle.
Editor's pick This set covers both elements without betting on one: Azure Dust is immune to all Four Banes, Flower Primes clear Chill and Burn with every sip, and Ring of Fire protects from the cold. The full Monkey King's Armor Set with the Jingubang keeps its 2 bonuses and your Great Sage form. The spells, transformation and soak chosen here stay yours on your first attempt against the Great Sage's Broken Shell, which follows with no shrine.

The Bull King's Bracers and Greaves, if you beat the Bishui Golden-Eyed Beast, add Chill and Burn resistances, but cost you the 5-piece bonus and the Great Sage form. The Fireproof Mantle can replace the Plantain Fan if Burn troubles you.
Ebon Flow is the other transformation recommended against it. Azure Dome, if you have already beaten Erlang Shen on Mount Mei, absorbs Chill and Burn to power itself up.
The fight
It fights bare-handed: punches, a leaping slam, ground pounds and shockwaves that spread out in rings. Its blows are slow and well telegraphed. At around 70% of its first bar, it vanishes at times and reappears near you. Once that bar is empty, its arms catch fire and it returns to full health: it keeps its moves, but fire and ice now mix into them, with bigger shockwaves. At around 60% of this second bar, it plucks some hair and creates a duplicate with its own bar; each carries one element, and the duplicate disappears after a while.
One set: no shrine or break between its 2 bars, and the Great Sage's Broken Shell follows with no shrine after it.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- Chill: its ice attacks freeze you, like its icy leap or the water it freezes around itself before it shatters, and leave you open to what follows or to the duplicate's blows.
- Burn: its fire shockwaves and explosions burn you, especially on its second bar; cure the state as soon as it sets in.
Attacks to watch
- Stone skin: it freezes in place with a golden flash, as with Rock Solid. Don't strike: your blow bounces off and it follows with a very costly grab. If you hit it by mistake, get away at once.
- Rush and grab: it charges at you, sometimes after vanishing; spot it by the ripples in the water and roll away. Its grab starts an unblockable string with massive damage.
- Fury: it pounds the ground all around itself up to 8 times, then a final blow sets off a delayed explosion, followed by a second one on the outer edge. Stay clear until it ends and keep a dodge for the final blast.
- Shockwaves: many of its ground blows send out spreading rings; jump or roll through them, or hop onto your staff with Pillar Stance. On its second bar, the fire waves are bigger: roll through rather than jump.
- Returning ring: a ring of energy or fire spreads out around it, then shrinks back and hits a second time on its way back; keep a dodge for the return. It opens its second bar this way and uses it to counter your heavy attacks.
What works
- Plantain Fan: very effective against it, especially on its second bar. It knocks it off balance, strips its elements and lets you strike without retaliation. Plantain Fan
- Rock Solid at the right moment: the deflection stuns it longer than Immobilize, and its blows are well telegraphed. Pillar Stance, for its part, keeps you above its shockwaves. Rock Solid, Pillar Stance
- Ring of Fire: stand in it to heal and build Focus; it also protects from the cold. Ring of Fire
- Body-Warming Powder and Body-Cooling Powder: each removes one of the two states and briefly raises your resistance. Bring both. Body-Warming Powder, Body-Cooling Powder
Strategy
- Gear up against fire as well as ice from its first bar: it may already strike with one or the other, and on the second, it mixes both.
- Save your spells, transformation and items for its second bar, especially for the duplicate at around 60%: target the original, on the lower bar; the duplicate disappears on its own after a while.
- It sometimes counters your charged Heavy Attacks with a decoy: spend your Focus on Varied Combos instead, except when it is stunned or lifted by the Plantain Fan. Plantain Fan
- Like other Stone enemies, it resists elemental attacks: focus on Attack and Critical Hit Chance.
Access
Mount Huaguo, Water Curtain Cave, Peak of Innocence shrine: climb to the summit, where Zhu Bajie waits near a stone, and touch it. The Old Monkey ferries you across the water to the Heart of Birthstone, where the Stone Monkey sits in the water: the fight follows the cutscene. First you need the 4 pieces of the Monkey King's Armor Set, taken from the Gold Armored Rhino, the Cloudtreading Deer, the Feng-Tail General and the Emerald-Armed Mantis, then the Jingubang in the Water Curtain Cave: wear the 4 pieces when you go in, its cutscene may require it. Mandatory.
What it gives
No loot: its defeat only opens the fight against the Great Sage's Broken Shell. It has no journal entry.
Updates
Update 1.0.21: fixed water behaviour in the Heart of Birthstone area, and visual effects of some Stone Monkey skills that disappeared too early under certain graphics settings.
In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
