Recommended gear

With what you can get before this boss, in your first cycle.

Editor's pick The Fireproof Mantle is one of the best pieces for this fight: equipped, it significantly raises your Burn Resistance and lets you hit Quick as Fire in the flames. Azure Dust makes you immune to the Four Banes, and so to Burn, while transformed; the Bronze Buddha Pendant raises your resistance to the Four Banes, and the Clay Vajra, the Bronze pieces and the Xiang River Goddess Gourd, as alternatives, your Burn Resistance. The Stranded Loong's Whisker extends your next Immobilize, the spell that pins both heads down. Golden mask and shirt, Non-Pure gauntlets and greaves: 6 Fine Gold Thread for the 4, 2 of them sold at the chapter's shrines; failing that, take the Bronze or Loongscale pieces listed.

The fight

A 2-on-1 fight: Quick as Fire, the head that rolls on the ground spewing fire, and Fast as Wind, the flying head with tusks, attack at the same time. Take down Quick as Fire first; left alone, Fast as Wind becomes enraged and dives at you.

One set: the 2 heads follow on with no pause or shrine.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Burn: the trail of flames Quick as Fire leaves as it rolls and Fast as Wind's gusts, which burn too; Quick as Fire's breath deals fire damage. Roll on the ground several times to put out the fire; Body-Cooling Powder removes it at once.

Attacks to watch

  • Quick as Fire, scorched ground: its head turns red, then it rolls in every direction, leaving behind a wave of fire that lasts a long time. Don't stay in it, go around it.
  • Quick as Fire, breath: medium range but long-lasting, it follows the rotation of its head. Never attack it in front of its mouth, but from the side or from behind.
  • Fast as Wind, wall of fire: while Quick as Fire rests, it swallows the flames on the ground and releases them as a wall of fire. Dodge to the side or roll through it.
  • Fast as Wind, gusts: it follows you, blowing gusts down from above, which burn too. It also fires wind projectiles, which track very well and turn into short-lived small tornadoes on impact: dodge at the last moment.
  • Fast as Wind, dive: it rises, spins, then dives low to the ground to gore you with its tusks, especially once alone. Dodge at the last moment: it gets stuck in the ground and stays dazed.

What works

  • Fireproof Mantle: equipped, it lets you stand in the fire on the ground and keep hitting Quick as Fire without worrying about your health. Fireproof Mantle
  • Immobilize: on Quick as Fire to keep it in place, then on Fast as Wind every time it's on the ground, to keep it there longer. Immobilize
  • Stand behind Quick as Fire's head: it blocks Fast as Wind's dive, which knocks it into the ground.

Strategy

  • Take down Quick as Fire first, with all your spells, your spirit and your vessel: it covers the ground in fire; alone, Fast as Wind is a mere formality.
  • After rolling or breathing fire, Quick as Fire tires and sits on the ground defenseless: hit it then, from the side or from behind. Hit hard, it goes flying: catch up to it.
  • The 2 heads chain their attacks when they're close together: split them up to face only one, keep both in the camera's view, and strike in short bursts without staying in one spot.
  • No shrine between the Gray-Bronze Cart and this fight: after the cart, you can go back to rest at the Height of Ember shrine and adjust your gear.

Access

Woods of Ember, right after the Gray-Bronze Cart: follow the narrow passage and climb the stairs toward the cries for help, to the large area where the fox hangs from a tree. After the cutscene, the 2 heads descend on the arena. Mandatory. The shrine before it is Height of Ember; the Ashen Pass II shrine is behind the arena.

What it gives

Will: 4,456

After the fight, the fox turns back into Pingping, the Bull King's daughter, and the rewards come after the cutscene. The Ashen Pass II shrine is to the left, up the stairs; opposite it, a chest holds a Celestial Jade Lotus Pill.
