Editor's pick The whole fight takes place in lava: the Fireproof Mantle makes you immune to it, and without it, the Xiang River Goddess Gourd protects you from it for a short time after each sip. Its hands break under heavy attacks, and the Turtle Treasure, absorbed earlier in the Valley Entrance lava lake, strengthens those costing 3 or 4 Focus Points, as an alternative to the Wandering Wight; the Stranded Loong's Whisker extends your next Immobilize after a sip. The Golden mask and shirt and the Non-Pure gauntlets and greaves take 6 Fine Gold Thread in all: failing that, keep your Loongscale pieces; the Jade Moon Rabbit and the Gold Sun Crow strengthen each other when worn together.

The fight

A single fight, with no pause, in a lava flow; small yaoguai linger on the edges. This big rock and magma golem is slow, but it hits hard. Its 2 hands are breakable: once they are destroyed, it is far less steady on its feet.

One set: a single fight, with no pause.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • No status reported: it strikes with its head, sweeps with its limbs, kicks and pounds the ground with its fists. The lava ripples that often follow these blows, like the arena's lava, deal fire damage.

Attacks to watch

  • Head attacks: most of its attacks come from its huge lava-infused head. They hit hard, but it is slow: you have time to dodge.
  • Long sweeps and kicks: besides its head, it also strikes with its limbs.
  • Ground punches: lava ripples often follow these blows. Get out of the way; the Fireproof Mantle gives you some protection against this fire damage.
  • The lava itself: without protection, it drains your health fast. In that case, fight from the rocky edges of the flow, luring it there.

What works

  • Fireproof Mantle: equipped, it makes you immune to the lava's damage, so you fight without constantly healing. Without it, the Xiang River Goddess Gourd protects you from it for a short time after each sip. Fireproof Mantle, Xiang River Goddess Gourd
  • A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, a light-attack combo, the Wandering Wight's attack, Cloud Step, then your transformation: this sequence is enough to take it down; if it is still standing, keep up the light attacks. Without lava protection, lure it near the edges first before immobilizing it. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step
  • Target its hands with your combos, follow-ups and heavy attacks: once they are broken, it staggers far more.
  • Umbral Abyss: turned into the Macaque Chief, you strike faster and harder. Umbral Abyss

Strategy

  • Take out the small yaoguai lingering on the edges of the flow first: the fight will go more smoothly.
  • With the Fireproof Mantle, first go through the lava lake to the right of the path: the Turtle Treasure, which carries a spirit, guards a chest there with Kun Steel.
  • No rush: fast travel between shrines lets you come back for it later, even once the story is over.

Access

Furnace Valley, Valley Entrance shrine: follow the main path to the big stone archway, then drop down to the left into the lava and follow the flow. It comes out of the lava when you approach the cluster of rocks, near the end. Optional, and easy to miss: it is tucked away from the path that climbs to Rakshasa Palace.

What it gives

Will: 1,783

The Samadhi Fire Crystal is one of the 3 needed, along with those of the Flint Vanguard and the Mother of Flamlings, for the Staff of Blazing Karma, an upgrade of the Cloud-Patterned Stone Staff that also takes 4 Gold Tree Cores.

Its spirit takes the form of a solid black rock to deflect an enemy strike, like Rock Solid but without staggering the foe; equipped, it slightly raises your Four Banes Resistance.

Secondary material: records split between Refined Iron Sand and 2 Silk with Cold Iron Leaves.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
