Recommended gear

With what you can get before this boss, in your first cycle.

Editor's pick His attacks are slow: the Fireproof Mantle mostly helps you worry less about the fireballs. The Golden mask and shirt considerably raise your attack right after your spirit or vessel, and the Non-Pure gauntlets and greaves considerably reduce the damage you take as you exit your spirit or transformation; these 4 pieces take 6 Fine Gold Thread in all, and the chapter's shrine store sells 2: failing that, keep your Loongscale pieces. The Jade Moon Rabbit and the Gold Sun Crow strengthen each other when worn together.

The fight

A single fight, in the middle of a brawl between Revenants and Bull Soldiers, under the fireballs thrown by the Brown-Iron Cart, posted higher up. His attacks are slow, and the fire hits him too. At around 25% of his health, he drops to one knee and the fight ends.

One set: a single fight, with no pause.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • No known status: his attacks are axe swings, kicks, charges and leaps. The fireballs raining on the arena deal fire damage.

Attacks to watch

  • Big, slow axe swings: dodge, then follow up with a combo while he recovers. He also kicks now and then.
  • A leap, axe raised overhead, then a slam as he lands: dodge this one too.
  • His charges and axe swings hit very hard, and his charge knocks you back: dodge them.
  • Fireballs: the Brown-Iron Cart bombards the arena; watch where they land.

What works

  • Lure him near where the fireballs land: the fire affects him too, wears down his health and sometimes staggers him completely, opening him up to long combos and heavy attacks.
  • A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, a light-attack combo, the Wandering Wight's attack, Cloud Step, then your transformation: this sequence is enough to finish him. A Pluck of Many, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step
  • Between your staff combos, Cloud Step makes you more mobile and Immobilize curbs his aggression. Cloud Step, Immobilize
  • Fireproof Mantle: with it, you worry less about the fireballs and more about the fight. Fireproof Mantle

Strategy

  • The brawling enemies: take them out first so they don't get in the way, or ignore them and focus on him.
  • Once the fight is over, clear out the rest of the brawl before talking to him, so you aren't interrupted.
  • The Brown-Iron Cart waits right after, at the top of the stairs: you can first go back and rest at a shrine.

Access

Woods of Ember, Ashen Pass I shrine, the chapter's first: go right and through the underpass; beyond it, Revenants and Bull Sergeants are fighting under a rain of fireballs, and he is in the thick of it. His health bar appears as soon as you approach. Mandatory: the way to the Brown-Iron Cart goes through his arena.

What it gives

Unlocks

No loot of his own: once beaten, he gives you the Five Element Carts quest, which leads to Bishui Cave.

Against the arena wall, 2 chests are left to open: Cold Iron Leaves, Will, a Mind Core and a Gold Tree Core. This loot doesn't come from him.

Updates

No published update changes this boss.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
