Recommended gear

With what you can get before this boss, in your first cycle.

Editor's pick Stuck in the passage, it has little variety in its attacks: the Fireproof Mantle helps against its continuous flames if you approach head-on. A Pluck of Many does most of the work, and Immobilize, which the Stranded Loong's Whisker extends after a sip, opens up safe hits. The Visionary Centipede Staff, an upgrade of the Chitin Staff with the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master's Golden Glowing Eye, 4 Gold Tree Cores and 8 Refined Iron Sand, hits harder if you gather those materials. Golden mask and shirt, Non-Pure gauntlets and greaves: 6 Fine Gold Thread for the 4, 2 of them sold at the chapter's shrines; failing that, keep your Loongscale pieces.

The fight

4 separate fights, against a single cart each time. The first 2, stuck in narrow passages, barely move and share the same attacks: fire breath, explosion, fist slam, fireball barrage. The Crimson-Silver Cart moves around, rolls to run you over and punches in combos. The Rusty-Gold Cart, in a large arena, combines the other 3 carts' attacks and adds its own: it is the most aggressive.

One set per cart: a shrine precedes each encounter, and each asks for something different: narrow passages for the first 2, moving carts next, Burn and a grab for the last one.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Burn: the Rusty-Gold Cart's flame spray can burn you on top of dealing heavy damage; the other 3 carts' flames deal fire damage. Roll on the ground several times to put out the fire; Body-Cooling Powder removes it at once.

Attacks to watch

  • Fire breath in a straight line in front of it, long range: approach from the side. Against the Brown-Iron Cart, stick close to its arms; against the Gray-Bronze Cart, hide in the alcove on the left, close to it. The Rusty-Gold Cart also spins in place spewing fire: stay close to it and spin with it.
  • Explosion: if you stay close to it for too long, it wraps both arms around itself, then explodes in a medium area; get away as soon as you see this. The Rusty-Gold Cart raises its arms and roars after a series of attacks: its explosion comes out fast, put some distance between you with Cloud Step.
  • Fists: it rears up slightly and slams both fists down in front of it; dodge or back off. The Crimson-Silver Cart punches in combos, and the Rusty-Gold Cart lunges to swipe at you: roll toward it to end up under it or to its side. When its hand glows red, it's about to grab you: dodge with good timing or transform, because a successful grab chains heavy damage.
  • A fireball barrage when you're far from it, often on a specific area: wait until it stops, then leave the area quickly. The Rusty-Gold Cart also aims its fireballs: dash out of the way.
  • Moving carts: the Crimson-Silver Cart rolls around to run you over, and when smoke builds around it, flames burst out at ground level all around it; get out of the way. Don't approach it from behind: after a while, it creates waves of fire around itself. The Rusty-Gold Cart, for its part, reverses to run over anyone standing behind it.

What works

  • Immobilize works on all 4 carts: it stops the Crimson-Silver Cart and the Rusty-Gold Cart from zooming around, and heavy attacks chained during the immobilization knock the Rusty-Gold Cart down. Immobilize
  • A Pluck of Many does most of the work against these big carts, which your clones hit from every side; fully upgraded, it makes short work of the Crimson-Silver Cart. A Pluck of Many
  • Fireproof Mantle: it helps against their continuous flames; activated against the Rusty-Gold Cart, it negates the damage from its breath and prevents most of the damage from its grab. Against it, also bring Body-Cooling Powder. Fireproof Mantle, Body-Cooling Powder
  • Charged heavy attacks: they stun the carts, and the more Focus Points you spend, the better the chance of a longer stun. Against the Rusty-Gold Cart, switch to Thrust Stance to charge them from range without being interrupted. Thrust Stance

Strategy

  • Brown-Iron Cart: at the top of the steps, the broken stairs on the right take you behind it, to the Camp of Seasons shrine, which you can light before the fight. From there, it can't turn around: hit it when its flames die down, and climb back onto the ledge when it gets ready to blow fire; some attacks still reach behind it.
  • Gray-Bronze Cart: it breathes fire as soon as you arrive; wait in cover until it's done before entering the passage. Stay close during its fist slams, which carry no fire, dodging them, and fall back into the alcove on the left when it rears up.
  • Crimson-Silver Cart: attack it from the side, it maneuvers poorly. If you exhausted the Pale-Axe Stalwart's dialogue after the first 2 carts, he fights alongside you: immobilize the cart so you can both hit it.
  • Rusty-Gold Cart: equip the Fireproof Mantle before resting at the Cooling Slope shrine, so you have it for the fight, then stay on its flanks.

Access

4 fights, each preceded by a shrine. 1: Brown-Iron Cart, Woods of Ember, Ashen Pass I shrine: it blocks the path at the top of the stairs leading up from the Pale-Axe Stalwart's arena. 2: Gray-Bronze Cart, Height of Ember shrine: after the Father of Stones, go through the door by the wall it climbed over, cross the cave, then head up the narrow path. 3: Crimson-Silver Cart, Furnace Valley: after the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains, set off from The Emerald Hall shrine and climb the main path's stairs. 4: Rusty-Gold Cart, optional, Field of Fire: once the firewall is gone, after the iron-ball slope, go down to the Cooling Slope shrine; it appears further on, in front of the frozen gate. The first 3 block the story path. A 5th cart, already broken, lies in the lava at Valley Entrance: it isn't fought.

What it gives

Unlocks

First 3 carts: records split, cart by cart, between Refined Iron Sand and 2 Silk with Cold Iron Leaves, without agreeing on which cart gives which. Will: from 1,738 to 1,775 each.

Rusty-Gold Cart: the Flame Orb, a curio that moderately raises your Burn Resistance, and 2 Cold Iron Leaves; depending on the records, 1 Fine Gold Thread and a Mind Core are added. Will: from 2,318 to 2,366.

After the Rusty-Gold Cart, talk to the dying Pale-Axe Stalwart, to the right of the frozen gate, then touch the gate and follow the passage: in the middle of the large room, a cutscene takes you to Bishui Cave. Baw-Lang-lang waits before that, on the left, at the bottom of the stairs.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
