The fight
2 phases, with 2 full health bars. Phase 1: hands bound behind his back, he only strikes with his feet and head. When his bar is empty, he breaks his chains, grows and regains all his health; phase 2: fists and palms charged with energy, faster and stronger.
One set: phase 2 follows phase 1 with no pause or shrine. Save your spells for it.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- No status effect reported: no magic or ranged attacks, only kicks, punches and a grab.
Attacks to watch
- Grab: a sudden dash, then an outstretched right hand; he always opens phase 2 this way. Unblockable, heavy damage: dodge backward or use Cloud Step.
- Fist raised behind his head: an energy wave around him, then 2 quick palms, the 2nd long-reaching and very strong. Dodging the 1st often gets you hit by the 2nd: Cloud Step or Immobilize.
- Phase 1: a very fast roundhouse kick when he tilts his head to your right, then a delayed jump kick to bait your dodge, and a spin on the ground.
- Phase 1: a forward flip then a delayed headbutt; a stomp, a one-and-a-half spin in the air, then another stomp with his back to you.
- Phase 2: glowing limbs mean a devastating blow is coming, such as a leap with 2 glowing fists or an elbow rush launched from afar.
What works
- Save spells and mana in phase 1. In phase 2: Immobilize, A Pluck of Many, then the Wandering Wight attack while he is immobilized. Immobilize, A Pluck of Many, Wandering Wight
- Cloud Step against the grab and the palms; Red Tides to keep up with his fast attacks, Azure Dust to soak blows. Cloud Step, Red Tides, Azure Dust
- Thrust Stance to back away into a heavy attack against his short-range blows; Pillar Stance to rise above his low kicks. Thrust Stance, Pillar Stance
- Medicine: Tiger Subduing Pellets for attack, and anything that raises Stamina and Focus. Tiger Subduing Pellets
Strategy
- Keep Stamina in reserve in phase 2: his combos chain on and on.
- Some kicks are delayed: don't dodge too early.
- A Pluck of Many works well: his attacks mostly target one opponent, so your clones hit him from behind.
Access
Valley of Ecstasy, Brook of Bliss shrine: climb the slope to the right of the shrine, away from the bridge, keep going to the end, then turn right; past a group of Frozen Corpses, he kneels with his hands bound in front of a large pagoda-like building. To reach the shrine, head down to the river from the Forest of Felicity and cross a bridge. Optional.
What it gives
- to obtainNon-Able
- to obtainBlood of the Iron Bull
- to obtainCold Iron Leaves × 2
Will: 1,188
Equipped, the Non-Able spirit raises Attack, Critical Hit Chance and Critical Damage, but sharply lowers Maximum Mana.
Until update 1.0.8, he also dropped Maitreya's Orb, now in a small box at Mindfulness Cliff; the official notes don't mention this change.
Updates
No update changes him. Since 1.0.13, he is part of the "Four Monks" and "Collective Strength" gauntlets of the Challenge mode.
In NG+
In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
