With what you can have when you first come across it.

Editor's pick Its red mushrooms can poison you: the Non-Pure Gauntlets and Greaves, the Cuo Jin-Yin Belt Hook, the Gall Gem, for a short time after each sip, and, as an alternative, the Commander Beetle spirit raise your Poison Resistance, the Bronze Buddha Pendant your Four Banes Resistance, Poison included, and Azure Dust makes you immune to them while transformed. The Golden mask and shirt and the Non-Pure gauntlets and greaves take 6 Fine Gold Thread in all; as alternatives, the Centipede Spiked Armguard and the Centipede Greaves of Transcendence take as much as the Non-Pure pieces, 1 each, also resist Poison and, worn together, massively reduce the continuous damage from being poisoned; without that thread, keep your Loongscale pieces. The Weaver's Needle, the Wandering Wight and Cloud Step are part of the sequence that takes it down.

The fight

A single fight, with no pause, in the clearing. It strikes with its weapon in combos and leaping slams; each blow sprouts small red mushrooms wherever it lands, even on you, and they explode shortly after. Its cap, thrown like a boomerang, is its only ranged attack.

One set: a single fight, with no pause.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Poison: the small red mushrooms that sprout wherever its blows land burst into a poisonous red mist, and its spores poison you. Other descriptions only mention red trails that explode and cost you health: above all, avoid standing on them.

Attacks to watch

  • Opening leap: as soon as it comes out of the ground, it leaps to hit you; be ready to dodge as you pull the mushroom.
  • Combos and leaping slam: they can be dodged, but each blow sprouts small red mushrooms where it lands.
  • Red mushrooms and trails on the ground: they explode after a short delay; if you're still on them, you lose health. Keep moving.
  • Mushrooms growing on you: they slow your walking a lot, but not your dodging, and more appear and explode around you as you move; keep moving.
  • Cap thrown like a boomerang: its only ranged attack, which tries to hit you from behind on its way back; stay mobile.

What works

  • A Pluck of Many, the Weaver's Needle, Immobilize, the Wandering Wight's attack, Cloud Step, then your transformation: this sequence is enough to take it down. A Pluck of Many, Weaver's Needle, Immobilize, Wandering Wight, Cloud Step
  • Thrust Stance: against its long-reach weapon, it lets you counter from a distance. Pillar Stance keeps you up high, safe from the exploding trails. Thrust Stance, Pillar Stance
  • Antimiasma Powder: keep it at hand against poison buildup; it instantly removes Poison and significantly raises your Poison Resistance for a short time. Antimiasma Powder

Strategy

  • It hides right next to the Ashen Pass III shrine: set up your gear at the shrine before pulling the mushroom.
  • Just past the clearing, The Crag meditation spot can be activated before or after the fight; the Purple Lingzhi just before it is not an enemy. The Crag, Ashen Pass III, Purple Lingzhi
  • No rush: fast travel between shrines, across chapters, lets you come back to fight it later, even once the story is over.

Access

Field of Fire, Ashen Pass III shrine, reached after the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains and the Crimson-Silver Cart. Facing the shrine, turn right: in the small clearing, there is a Purple Lingzhi to pick, but the big red mushroom in the middle is the boss; pull it to make it burst out. Optional and hidden, it has no journal portrait.

What it gives

Will: 1,786

The Earth Spirit Cap, a guaranteed drop, slowly drains your health but massively increases your gourd's healing.

The Nine-Capped Lingzhi Seed goes to Chen Loong, in Zodiac Village, who grows it: it counts as 2 plants, the Nine-Capped Lingzhi and the Purple Lingzhi. It is one of the seeds to gather for the "Seeds to Sow" achievement and for the Graceful Orchid soak. The Nine-Capped Lingzhi is used for the Soul Remigration Pill.

Its spirit gives you its form and cap: with every step, lingzhi sprout and explode, dealing Poison Damage to nearby foes. Equipped, it moderately reduces the Mana cost of Mysticism spells, including Immobilize and Ring of Fire.

The common material varies between sources, most often 2 Silk and Cold Iron Leaves, sometimes a Refined Iron Sand.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
