Recommended gear

Coming back later: everything you can get in Chapter 6 without beating it.

Editor's pick Later in Chapter 6, the Monkey King's Armor Set and the Jingubang: with all 5 pieces, every critical hit speeds up your spell cooldowns, so Immobilize's too. The Celestial Birthstone Fragment gets your Golden Lining's banes through his resistances; if he turns them against you, Flower Primes clear them. The Great Sage form, for its part, only works on Mount Huaguo.

The fight

The hardest fight in the game, at human size. Above his health bar, a guard gauge reduces your damage while it holds: he gets it back at each threshold, around 70 to 75%, 50% and 10%, and it recharges if you leave him alone. He chains long spear combos, with his dog, and beams from his third eye. Around 70 to 75%, he flies up and slams down a giant axe, which then joins his combos. Around 50%, his duplicates fire beams from all sides, then he unleashes a storm of swords and charges his spear with lightning. At the end, he turns into a bird and flies off: what follows is played as a giant.

One set: no shrine during the fight, and what follows is played in an imposed form, without your gear.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Shock: his lightning inflicts it, especially his third-eye beam, his dogs and his lightning-charged spear. Keep Shock Resistance up at all times, through gear or Shock-Quelling Powder.

Attacks to watch

  • Glowing thrust: at any point in a combo, or after a jump, his spear glows and he lunges with a thrust that opens a cinematic grab with massive damage. Dodge sideways and always prioritize his finishers.
  • Third-eye beams: his eyes glow, then a beam sweeps the arena; dodge through it, or get behind him. At 50%, his duplicates fire from everywhere: run along the edge of the arena without dodging, or stand under him, he never aims straight down. The big direct beam that follows is his most dangerous attack.
  • Giant axe, around 70 to 75%: he glows, and stuns you if you are close to him, flies up, then the axe falls where you stand, followed by an electric shockwave. Keep your eyes on the axe, roll at the last moment, then jump or dodge the shockwave.
  • Storm of swords, after 50%: hold Staff Spin to deflect the swords, or sprint. When the lightning turns red, the last volley can't be deflected and he dives at you: stop spinning and dodge.
  • Lightning combo: he charges his spear, strikes, rises, then crashes down; the lightning turns red just before the impact, that's your cue to dodge. He also rides his enlarged spear across the arena: keep moving until the final impact.

What works

  • Plantain Fan: its hurricane empties his guard gauge in a few seconds and briefly lowers his defense. Throw it at the end of one of his combos, otherwise he steps out of it, then hit hard while he is vulnerable. Plantain Fan
  • Against his guard, fast repeated hits, such as Staff Spin up close or a multi-hit spirit: while it holds, he dodges your charged Heavy Attacks. Save your Focus for a 4-point heavy attack when it breaks.
  • Immobilize, at the right moment: when his guard is empty, at the start or end of a combo, never while he is airborne. Cloud Step stuns him and cuts his combos short. An upgraded Spell Binder is the other option, instead of Immobilize. Immobilize, Cloud Step, Spell Binder
  • Against Shock: Shock-Quelling Powder clears it and briefly raises your resistance. Flower Primes clear your banes with every sip, also useful if he turns a bane you inflicted on him back against you. Shock-Quelling Powder, Flower Primes

Strategy

  • Your transformation doesn't last: he transforms too, into a tiger or a bird, and ends yours if he hits you. Pick an agile form and use it at the start of a guard; dodge his first blow, then hit him so he returns to human form.
  • Keep your health above 3/4: several of his blows can kill you in one hit. It is a battle of attrition: reach the second half with a well-filled gourd.
  • Save A Pluck of Many for when his guard is empty; at his last threshold, around 10%, the Plantain Fan followed by A Pluck of Many can finish him off. A Pluck of Many, Plantain Fan
  • Bring your best medicines: Loong Aura Amplification Pellets, Enhanced Tiger Subduing Pellets, Ginseng Pellets for Focus, and a Soul Remigration Pill, which revives you once. Loong Aura Amplification Pellets, Enhanced Tiger Subduing Pellets, Ginseng Pellets, Soul Remigration Pill

Access

Mount Mei, Mei-Jian Peak (Chapter 3 secret area). Pagoda Realm, Snow-Veiled Trail shrine: rather than climbing the stairs, take the snowy path down, cross the wooden bridge and follow the path to the big gate of The Great Pagoda. At the top of the steps, Maitreya waits in front of the blank central mural and opens Mount Mei for you. Climb to the Mei-Jian Peak shrine, then take the next flight of stairs: Erlang, the Sacred Divinity waits at the top, for the first of the 3 fights. Optional.

What it gives

No loot of his own: everything drops after Erlang Shen, at the end of the 3 fights: Azure Dome, the Tri-Point Double-Edged Spear, 2 Celestial Ribbons and 1 Kun Steel, along with the "Meet the Match" trophy.

Free Mind: then beat the final boss, and the relic is handed to you at the start of the next cycle. Each win over Erlang unlocks one of its 3 talents; if you already have the relic, the talent is available right away. It takes 3 cycles to get them all.

Secret ending: after the Mount Mei sequence, beat the final boss. If you have already defeated it, choose "Continue Journey" on the title screen: this option puts you back right before it, to beat it again.

Updates

Update 1.0.13: fixed skills that made him deal abnormal damage. Update 1.0.14: fixed his abnormal guard gauge recovery in the Brothers of Mei gauntlet of the Challenge mode.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
