Recommended gear

As against the Four Heavenly Kings, you play the giant Stone Monkey, with fixed moves: light attacks for Focus, heavy attacks that heal you, Rock Solid, then the ice and fire the fight grants you. Your items and gear don't apply. The fight that matters for your gear is Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, at human size, 2 fights earlier: see his page.

The fight

The last fight of the sequence, still as the Stone Monkey, against the giant Erlang. He opens with a beam from his third eye, then chains weapon strikes, grabs and feints. Around 70% health, he switches to a flaming sword, which he also turns into a red lightning whip; around 50%, his axe joins his combos. Later, he grabs you and breathes fire on you: your health seems to drop to zero, but it is scripted, you absorb the flames, come back to full health and hit harder.

Imposed form: the whole fight is played as the giant Stone Monkey, with fixed moves.

What it inflicts

  • No status effect reported against the Stone Monkey: descriptions mention fire and lightning damage, and a scripted burn that powers you up.

Attacks to watch

  • He licks his weapon: at the end of the combo, he fires a beam from his mouth. Dodge sideways, he is left open afterward.
  • A third-eye beam sweeping the battlefield, and grabs mixed into his strikes, with feints to catch you off guard.
  • Flaming sword and red lightning whip, from 70% on: more reach and damage. Dodge through, then spend your Focus to heal.
  • Axe combos around 50%: more hits to avoid, but a well-timed Rock Solid deflection cuts the combo. He can also throw his axe or shoot a lightning arrow.

What works

  • Rock Solid: his sweeping strikes never stop, there is rarely a bad time to deflect. Rock Solid
  • Keep Focus points for a heavy attack when he hits hard: it heals you.
  • The ice spell the fight grants you: keep it active as much as possible, you deal more damage.
  • After the fire scene: fiery fists in your varied combos and a shower of flames by spending your Focus.

Strategy

  • Slip dodges in between your charged heavy attacks: he attacks relentlessly.
  • The scene where he burns you doesn't kill you: you come back to full health, powered up.
  • Much easier than Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, if you deflect and dodge often; he still hits hard.

Access

Mount Mei, Mei-Jian Peak (Chapter 3 secret area). Pagoda Realm, Snow-Veiled Trail shrine: rather than climbing the stairs, take the snowy path down, cross the wooden bridge and follow the path to the big gate of The Great Pagoda. At the top of the steps, Maitreya waits in front of the blank central mural and opens Mount Mei for you. Climb to the Mei-Jian Peak shrine, then take the next flight of stairs. Erlang Shen is the last of the 3 fights, right after the Four Heavenly Kings. Optional.

What it gives

Azure Dome turns you into a small stone monkey immune to Shock and Poison, which absorbs Chill and Burn to power up and keeps access to your spells. The Tri-Point Double-Edged Spear is given to you as is, with no crafting.

Meet the Match achievement.

Free Mind, the 6th relic, is obtained at the start of NG+ if you beat Erlang, then the final boss. Each win against Erlang unlocks one of its 3 bonuses: you must redo the sequence over 3 cycles to get them all.

Updates

No update targets Erlang Shen. Update 1.0.13 fixed skills of Erlang, the Sacred Divinity, that dealt abnormal damage, and 1.0.14 fixed his guard gauge in the Brothers of Mei challenge.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
