Recommended gear

With what you can have when you first come across it.

Editor's pick Against its Poison: the Cuo Jin-Yin Belt Hook, found early in the Webbed Hollow, the Bronze Buddha Pendant and the Gall Gem; Azure Dust makes you immune to the Four Banes while transformed. The Serpentscale pieces, as alternatives, also resist Poison. The Chitin Staff needs 4 Refined Iron Sand: without them, keep the Kang-Jin Staff.

The fight

A single fight, with no pause. It opens by binding you with its silk, then dives at you. After some attacks, it stays face down for a while, but it can still wriggle and splash poison.

One set: a single phase, and Poison throughout the fight.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • Poison: poison globs spat both forward and backward, which linger on the ground for a while, and splashes when it wriggles on the ground. Bring Poison protection and Antimiasma Powder.

Attacks to watch

  • It rears up and shoots sticky threads in front of it: if caught, mash to break free before it charges.
  • Poison globs, from the front as well as the back: they linger on the ground for a while.
  • It thrashes in place, spraying liquid around itself: get away, then strike while it stays still.
  • Body swing: it twists, then swings its whole weight; Rock Solid stops it, if you took it instead of Cloud Step.
  • A leap, then a slam, slow: dodge to the side as it lands.

What works

  • Poison protection before going in: the Cuo Jin-Yin Belt Hook moderately raises your Poison Resistance, and Antimiasma Powder removes Poison. Cuo Jin-Yin Belt Hook, Antimiasma Powder
  • A Pluck of Many, fully upgraded, and a spirit that staggers, like the Wandering Wight: the fight is short. A Pluck of Many, Wandering Wight
  • Rock Solid, in place of Cloud Step: it stops its body swing cold. Rock Solid

Strategy

  • Strike while it lies face down. When it thrashes in place spraying its liquid, back off: it doesn't move, then stays still for a moment, another window.
  • Pillar Stance: it lifts you above the poison pools.
  • During its poison volleys, keep your distance while strafing, then close in again.

Access

Webbed Hollow, The Verdure Bridge shrine: cross the green bridge, then go left to 2 talking lanterns under an archway; after the cutscene, go through the treasure room: it waits beyond, on a cliff covered in cocoons. Optional.

What it gives

Will: 1,438

The Elder Amourworm spirit takes a follow-up: hand the Proto-Amourworm to Chen Loong in Zodiac Village, then feed the little worm that appears 3 Rice Cocoons, found at random by breaking cocoons in the Webbed Hollow. Rest at the shrine after each cocoon, the last one included: the spirit then replaces the worm.

Zodiac Village opens with Chen Loong's quest, in Chapter 3.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
