Recommended gear

With what you can have when you first come across it.

Editor's pick Immobilize stops him from teleporting, and the Stranded Loong's Whisker extends your next Immobilize after a sip. Red Tides is the recommended transformation against him. The Wandering Wight raises your Defense, useful if the chant hits during the fight, and the 3 Ochre pieces protect your decoy, which draws his fire.

The fight

A single fight, with no pause. He has almost no melee attacks: projectiles, lasers and ground explosions, and he often teleports when you attack. He also brings some of the kneeling corpses to life as Withered Corpses. After about a third of his health, he shatters the remaining corpses and creates a large runic circle: 4 rings fire lasers, then move to the corners of the room and sweep the floor.

One set: no shrine or pause between the 2 phases.

Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine, never mid-fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.

What it inflicts

  • None of the Four Banes: his projectiles, lasers and explosions deal damage without a status. His small projectiles can, however, stun you for a long time.

Attacks to watch

  • Flash laser: when the crystal on his staff flares brighter, a laser fires almost at once, with a recognizable sound. It's his hardest move to avoid: it takes a well-timed Perfect Dodge.
  • A circle of projectiles bursting from the crystal and arcing down, or 3 bursts that track you. Staff Spin deflects them; or dodge through them to get closer.
  • Ground explosions with almost no warning, then, later on, a trail of explosions that follows you: stay mobile, roll and sprint.
  • The 4 corner rings sweep the floor with continuous lasers: jump or dodge through them, or stay perched in Pillar Stance while charging your attack, then hit him.
  • In the second phase, he teleports up to 3 times in a row with a laser at each appearance, the last one sustained. He can also rise up and bring down beams from the ceiling that shrink the safe space.

What works

  • Immobilize stops him from teleporting: use it to chain your combos. Immobilize
  • Cloud Step rather than Rock Solid: your decoy draws his fire during the 4-ring sequence, and the spell helps you reach him when he moves away. Cloud Step
  • Red Tides: the recommended transformation against him; your spirit attacks and vessels matter little in this fight. Red Tides

Strategy

  • Stick close to him: most of your damage will come from light combos.
  • Take down the corpses he animates right away: they are only a distraction, but will get in your way later. They don't come back on later attempts.
  • Against the lasers sweeping the floor, Pillar Stance lifts you out of reach; but his small projectiles can knock you off it, and Smash or Thrust Stance suits the rest of the fight better.

Access

Pagoda Realm, Upper Pagoda. From the shrine, turn around: the pit with the purple glow, right across, leads to a secret cell. Drop onto a rooftop to avoid fall damage, then onto the rubble. Optional and hidden.

What it gives

Will: 1,193

Unlocks

His death lifts the purple seals on the prison cells. Behind them: the prisoner, the Third Prince, who asks you for the spirits of his 4 captains; the two-headed rat's corpse, from which you pull Ashen Slumber if you exhausted its dialogue in Chapter 2; an empowered Enslaved Yaksha that gives its spirit; and chests, one of them with a Mind Core.

The Frostsprout Twig raises your Chill Resistance. The Spirit of Captain Lotus-Vision is a key item for the Third Prince, not an equippable spirit, and it can't be cultivated.

Updates

No published update changes this boss.

In NG+

In NG+, you keep your gear, spells, transformations and spirits, and bosses are tougher. Key items don't carry over: the chapter's quest items must be taken again.
