Recommended gear
With what you can get before this boss, in your first cycle.
Editor's pick No fight: your hits don't hurt it, and all that counts is your Stamina during its leaps, then your Health and Burn Resistance during the ripping. The Back Scratcher adds 30 max Stamina; if you beat the Cloudtreading Deer first, its Lotus Silk Cloudtreaders add 30 more, and if you beat the Gold Armored Rhino first, its Gold Suozi Armor adds 30 max Health. Activated, the Fireproof Mantle makes you immune to Burn for a short time, and the Flame Orb, the Flint Vanguard spirit, the Bronze Monkey Mask and the Ebongold Armguard raise your Burn Resistance.

Otherwise: Beetle Captain
- Curios
If you face the General before the Gold Armored Rhino, wear the Yaksha Armor Set's Embroidered Shirt of Outrage instead of the Gold Suozi Armor: it raises your Burn Resistance and, on its own, does not trigger the set's 4-piece effect, which also increases the damage you take.
Once the Fireproof Mantle is activated, Burn is no longer a threat: the Beetle Captain spirit, which moderately raises your max Stamina, can then replace the Flint Vanguard for the whole ride, to help the first trial.
The Fireproof Mantle is obtained by beating Elder Jinchi, in the Chapter 1 secret area, which also unlocks crafting of the Bronze pieces; the Back Scratcher costs 2,400 Will at Chapter 1 shrines. Without the Mantle, aim for more than 700 Health and close to 50 Burn Resistance.
The fight
No real fight: it doesn't attack and your hits don't hurt it. First trial: perched on its head, grab its antennae and hold the button during its 3 leaps; your Stamina drains, and at zero you let go and fall. Second trial: when it stops, near the Rhino Watch Slope, grab its flaming antennae again and hold on in one go until you rip them off, while Burn eats away at your Health: letting go and grabbing again won't kill it.
One set: the pause between the 2 trials isn't a shrine, and resting at a shrine sends it back to its starting point; set up your gear for both trials before getting on your cloud.
Spells, transformation and soaks are set at a Keeper's Shrine (soaks also with the Shen Monkey), never during a fight: what you bring into a fight stays until the end. One spell per category: Cloud Step and Rock Solid exclude each other, pick one before the fight.
What it inflicts
- Burn: during the second trial, its flaming antennae deal continuous Burn damage to you as long as you hold them; activated, the Fireproof Mantle makes you immune to it.
Attacks to watch
- Stamina running dry during the leaps: you let go, fall and take fall damage, and you have to start over. Aim for at least about 300 Stamina: benchmarks range from 290 to 350.
- Burn while ripping off the antennae: its flaming antennae eat away at your Health and, without enough protection, you die before the end. Without the Fireproof Mantle activated, plan on more than 700 Health and close to 50 Burn Resistance.
- Boarding it anywhere but its start: caught mid-route, it jumps to out-of-bounds areas and you get knocked off, whatever your stats. Land on it on the Mantis-Catching Swamp side.
- Letting go mid-ripping: grabbing its antennae several times won't kill it; you have to hold on in one go until the end.
What works
- Fireproof Mantle: equipped, it raises your Burn Resistance; activated, it makes you immune to Burn for a short time, enough to hold on through the ripping without losing Health. Fireproof Mantle
- Stamina: the Back Scratcher adds 30 max Stamina; also max out the Rampant Vigor talent, take the Celestial Nonary Pills or spend your Mind Cores at Xu Dog for more Stamina. A Tonifying Decoction also raises your max Stamina, and Body-Fleeting Powder and Ascension Powder, which remove the Stamina cost of actions, are recommended. Back Scratcher, Rampant Vigor, Celestial Nonary Pill, Mind Core, Xu Dog, Tonifying Decoction, Body-Fleeting Powder, Ascension Powder
- Health and Burn Resistance: the Flint Vanguard spirit and the Flame Orb raise your resistance, and so does Body-Cooling Powder, for a short time. Redistribute your Mind Cores at Xu Dog toward Health and Burn Resistance, and take the Celestial Jade Lotus Pills, which raise your max Health; a Longevity Decoction raises it too. Finally, max out the Bane Mitigation talent, which mitigates the effects of the Four Banes. Flint Vanguard, Flame Orb, Body-Cooling Powder, Xu Dog, Celestial Jade Lotus Pill, Bane Mitigation, Longevity Decoction
Strategy
- The safest option is to activate the Fireproof Mantle during the pause between the 2 trials, without delay, right before grabbing its antennae again: equipped, it only raises your Burn Resistance; activated, it makes you immune to Burn for a short time. Keep enough to activate it: a vessel only activates with enough Qi. Fireproof Mantle
- Get ready at a shrine right before: heal up, max out your Stamina and Health, equip your Burn gear, then fly to it; once you have the Crown, stop at a shrine again to go back to your usual gear.
- The order of the 3 bosses is free: if you beat the Cloudtreading Deer and the Gold Armored Rhino first, the Lotus Silk Cloudtreaders add 30 max Stamina and the Gold Suozi Armor, 30 max Health; enough to make its 2 trials easier. Cloudtreading Deer, Gold Armored Rhino, Lotus Silk Cloudtreaders, Gold Suozi Armor
Access
Foothills, Mantis-Catching Swamp: a giant insect that leaps from spot to spot above the lake. From the Verdant Path shrine, go past the Supreme Celestial Inspector's arena to the edge of the cliff, summon the Somersault Cloud, turn left and fly almost to the end, to a small rise of parched ground before the Water-Wood Beast's water; wait for it to jump onto it, then land on its head. The Somersault Cloud, obtained by beating the Inspector, is the only way to get on it. Board it at its starting point, on the Mantis-Catching Swamp side: boarded elsewhere along its path, you will get knocked off. If you fall, find it again and start over; resting at a shrine sends it back to its starting point. Mandatory: one of the 3 bosses to beat, in any order, before the Emerald-Armed Mantis.
What it gives
- to obtainGolden Feng-Tail Crown
It only gives the Golden Feng-Tail Crown, the Mythical headgear of the Monkey King's Armor Set: no unique effect, but 30 extra max Mana. No source gives any Will or Mind Core; once beaten, it leaps away.
